Because the phone was on speaker, Rigby's words made everyone in Zoltan's car turn deathly pale.
Fraser clenched his fists. It was just as he’d suspected. Sire had either tampered with the brakes or planted a bomb. After all, he had been the one to subtly guide Sire in that direction. He never imagined he’d be caught in his own trap.
As the car sped recklessly onward with a bomb ticking beneath them, Thatch couldn't take it anymore. He frantically shook the back of the seat in front of him, screaming, “I want out! I want out right now! Butler, find a way to stop this car! I don't want to die in here!”
Solomon, annoyed by Thatch’s hysteria, roared, “If you don’t want to die, then shut up!”
Thatch shot back without thinking, “Will shutting up help? You think the car will stop if I’m quiet?”
From the adjacent car, Haskell spoke into the phone, “Rigby, do you know when Sire will press the switch?”
Rigby’s voice was urgent. “I don’t know, but I guessed it would be when your car is close to my place. That stretch of road has fewer people, so it wouldn't harm as many innocent bystanders.”
Hearing this, Fraser glanced at the time. Under normal circumstances, they should have arrived by nine. It was already eight-forty. That meant they had twenty minutes.
But that was just Rigby’s guess. What if Sire wasn’t planning to wait until they reached their destination? What if he detonated it in the next second?
So, tampering with the brakes wasn't the goal. The goal was to keep the car moving so no one could disarm the bomb.
Sweat dripped down Solomon's forehead. “Fraser! Think of something!”
Fraser, also sweating, gritted his teeth. “What am I supposed to do?”
Solomon cursed, “Aren’t you supposed to be smarter than Haskell?”

Solomon hesitated, on the verge of speaking. If he exposed the plan here, Zoltan would know everything. But… they were about to die. What did any of that matter now?

Once everyone had calmed down, they saw that a phone was strapped to the drone, with a video call active. On the screen was Sire’s face.

Fraser, Solomon, and Thatch all turned to look at Zoltan.
Zoltan’s face was grim, but his voice was steady. “No. I never wanted to harm Haskell’s mother.”
