Pushing too hard, she collapsed back into the muddy puddle.
Zander's hand froze in midair. Seeing her fierce determination to struggle in the mud rather than let him touch her, his brows knotted together.
"Eliza, are you done throwing this tantrum?"
Zander's voice cut coldly through the pouring rain.
"I know you felt wronged at The Roth Clinic just now, and I apologize on my parents' behalf! They're older, a bit traditional, and they don't know the truth about what happened back then. Why do you have to be so hostile toward them?"
He took a deep breath, softening his tone, though his eyes still held a condescending kind of mercy. "You can't delay treating your leg any longer. Western medicine can't fix it; only my father's Roth Neuro-Stimulation Therapy can save you. Stop being stubborn and come home with me. Just swallow your pride, apologize to them, and I promise I'll beg my dad. He won't leave you to suffer. I'll cover all the medical bills. I'll make it up to you, okay?"
Swallow her pride? Apologize? Make it up to her?
Eliza felt like she had just heard the sickest joke in the world.
She looked up at the man she had once loved with every fiber of her being, suddenly realizing how terrifyingly foreign he had become.
Leaning heavily against a nearby tree, she fought through the agonizing, tearing pain in her left leg to slowly, painfully pull herself upright.
In the howling wind and rain, her frail frame swayed, threatening to give out.
Her chilling gaze locked dead onto Zander.
"Zander Roth, you're utterly heartless!"
She choked on the last word, still unable to bring herself to mention the baby she had miscarried all those years ago.
It was a wound too agonizing to ever speak aloud.
Every time she thought about it, a suffocating wave of despair washed over her.
She drew a ragged breath, forcing herself to pivot. "You were so logical that while I was lying in the ICU wishing I was dead, you were hovering by her bedside, comforting her because she was 'spooked'!"
Eliza trembled uncontrollably. It was pure rage, profound injustice, and the toxic resentment that had festered in her soul through three years of sleepless nights.
"Did you think I went to the clinic today to harass you? Get over yourself, Zander! If I had known that place belonged to the Roth family before I made the appointment, I would have been too disgusted to even step foot through the door!"
