She looked away, watching the streetlight stretch his shadow into a long, distorted shape.
"Zander."
She spoke slowly, making sure every single word was crystal clear.
"Listen to yourself right now."
"'My parents', 'Yvonne', 'look at it from my perspective'."
"From start to finish, the only person you care about is yourself. You wanted me to understand why you had to save Yvonne—fine, I understood. You wanted me to understand why she got pregnant—fine, I understood that too."
"Now tell me."
She refused to look at him again.
"When is someone going to look at it from my perspective?"
"You stand here crying about how hard your life is. Zander—have you ever, even once, thought about where that leaves me?"
Zander's face went completely white before he immediately scrambled to defend himself!
"That's because you're the reasonable one!"
"Eliza! I thought I was the one you loved and understood the most!"
Eliza finally lost the last shred of her patience. It was too late for this.
"You said it yourself, that was in the past! I used to love you! I don't anymore, what part of that don't you understand?!"
"Zander, I think I've made myself perfectly clear. We are about to have nothing to do with each other. There is nothing left to say."
"You heard it yourself last time. Mr. Lawrence and I are good friends. He's blocking you for your own good," she said, emphasizing every syllable.
"He's trying to let you keep a little bit of your dignity as an adult."
Eliza glanced back at Julian, who had been completely silent the whole time.
The man stood at the edge of the streetlight's glow, the wind catching the corner of his long coat. His hands were tucked casually into his pockets, his demeanor quiet and gentle.
As the breeze rolled by, it seemed to carry the faint, sweet scent of lemon scones.
He hadn't done a single thing.
He just stood there, completely composed.
"When it comes to acting like a decent human being."
Her voice dripped with pure mockery.
Eliza used to be so gentle and understanding!
Why!
Zander bent over, resting his hands on his knees, gasping for air.
His phone started buzzing in his pocket.
He pulled it out and looked at the screen—it was Eleanor.
"Zander! Where the hell are you?! Get home right now!"
"Let me make this clear. Until my precious grandson is born, you are going to keep your head down and stay out of trouble. You go to work, you come home, and nowhere else!"
"Your father and I have already picked a date. Next Saturday, I've got the wedding planners coming to the house to go over the designs. You will be there!"
"If you keep refusing to cooperate, your father said he'll bypass you entirely and transfer your shares of the clinic directly to Yvonne's child—"
Zander gripped his phone, his eyes still locked on the retreating silhouettes of Eliza and Julian.
He slowly straightened up, pressing the phone to his ear. His voice sounded so raw and hoarse it didn't even sound like him.
"...I know. I'll be right there."
