Eliza stared at the two lines of text popping up on her screen, a wave of sickening disgust churning in her stomach.
It was partly due to Miles's shamelessness, but mostly due to Zander's sheer stupidity.
"Covered the five grand." "Don't bother your sister."
What a magnificent savior, what a considerate, perfect husband.
Zander was probably sitting in his sprawling, lively family estate right now, practically moved to tears by his own generosity.
He genuinely thought he was putting out a fire, completely oblivious to the fact that he was only pouring gasoline on Miles's madness.
A rhythmic, urgent knock echoed through the room.
The door rattled under the assault, accompanied by Gwen's signature holler. "Eliza, open up! I brought the ultimate cure for a bad day. A spicy seafood boil and ice-cold beer!"
Eliza took a deep breath, pushing down the suffocating frustration in her chest, and got up to open the door.
Gwen breezed inside like a hurricane, holding two steaming takeout boxes of spicy shrimp. She kicked the door shut behind her and slapped a thick stack of documents onto the coffee table. "Here. A brand-new catalog of prime drama. It's a fantastic read."
The lawyer replied almost instantly, clearly amused by the sheer absurdity of the situation.
"Rest assured, Ms. Shaw. First, you are currently in a mandatory divorce cooling-off period, and the fact of your separation is well-documented. Second, as Miles is a legal adult, his debts have no legal association with you. Third, since Mr. Roth made this transfer with full knowledge of the debt's nature and without your written consent, it is classified as a 'voluntary gift.' Simply put, he is playing the martyr on his own dime, and it has absolutely nothing to do with you."
Gwen craned her neck to read the message and laughed even harder. She popped a freshly peeled shrimp into Eliza's mouth. "Hear that? Zander probably thought he had you by the throat, trying to play the benevolent hero. But in the eyes of the law, he's just a wealthy idiot handing out free cash! The more he gives, the more Miles will leech off him, and you won't owe a single cent. Let him embarrass himself. I'll grab some popcorn."
Eliza chewed the spicy, savory shrimp. The fiery heat exploded on her tongue, clearing some of the heavy fog in her mind.
She let out a soft sigh. "Gwen, have you noticed that Zander's way of solving problems always revolves around 'I assume' and 'good enough'? He never considers basic logic. He only cares about his own cheap hero complex."
