Yvonne, oh, Yvonne.
Didn't you make a huge spectacle at the hospital, announcing you were carrying the Roth family heir?
Didn't you parade that ultrasound around, bragging about how your unborn child was going to secure your marriage into high society?
So why are you suddenly on the candidate list for a grueling, stunt-heavy dance role?
Health Status: Excellent.
Just one word. Clean and simple.
No notes about a pregnancy.
No clauses requesting special accommodations.
"Extremely cooperative, available to join the crew immediately."
Eliza pushed open the doors to her apartment building.
She walked straight into her living room, spread the roster out on the coffee table, and used her phone to snap photos of every single detail on Yvonne's profile.
Then, she opened her messaging app and pulled up Gwen's chat.
She didn't send a voice note; she typed it out, word by word.
[Gwen, guess who I just found in the dancer roster for Echoes of the Valley.]
Two seconds later.
[Who?]
[Yvonne Vance. Lead dancer candidate. Notes say: Extremely cooperative, available to join immediately. Health status: Excellent.]
This time, Gwen didn't reply instantly.
There was about ten seconds of silence.
Then, an audio message practically exploded through the speaker.
"WHAT???"
Gwen's voice went from a shriek to hysterical laughter.
"Holy shit! Isn't Yvonne supposed to be pregnant?! Isn't she carrying the 'Roth family heir'?! Wasn't she using the baby to marry into money??? She's trying to take a Director Evans project while pregnant??"
"If she really was pregnant, there's no way she'd dare take this job! Everyone knows Director Evans has his actors flying around on wires doing insane stunts!!"
"And if she isn't pregnant—ha!! Oh, this is juicy!! Was that ultrasound fake?! Did she fake a pregnancy to trap Zander?!"
"My god! What is this woman's face made of?! Titanium?!"
"Eliza."
His voice on the other end was deep and steady, carrying an unhurried, grounded rhythm.
In the background, she could faintly hear the rustling of papers; he was probably working.
Eliza skipped the small talk. "Julian, I have a medical question I'd like your advice on. Are you available to meet up?"
The rustling of papers stopped.
Julian's tone remained perfectly even.
"Sure. Twenty minutes. The cafe downstairs from your place."
"Okay," Eliza murmured, and ended the call.
She swapped her jacket, slipped the roster into her canvas tote, and caught a glimpse of herself in the entryway mirror before heading out.
Her hair was a bit frizzy, and faint dark circles shadowed her eyes.
She hesitated for a second, then grabbed a tube of lip balm from a small basket on the shoe cabinet and applied a thin layer.
Realizing how unnecessary the gesture was, she let out a soft scoff, pulled the door open, and left.
