Miriam sprang up from the floor and slapped a hand over Miles's mouth.
"Stop talking nonsense!"
Miles struggled under his mother's grip, letting out a few muffled whimpers.
The debt collector watched the mother and son with cold eyes, raised an eyebrow, and turned back to Zander.
"Whatever. I don't care who signed for it. I'm getting my money today."
It was a dead end.
Zander's mind raced.
He thought of Eliza.
If he paid the four hundred and seventy thousand dollars right now—Miles wouldn't stop. He'd only get worse. He would treat Zander as his personal piggy bank, shaking it every time he lost at the tables.
But if he didn't pay—
These thugs would go after Eliza.
No matter what he chose, Eliza would be dragged down.
Zander clenched his fists.
His knuckles turned white.
Just then—
Someone shoved Miles hard.
It was the other debt collector—short but incredibly strong. He slammed a hand into Miles's back as the coward tried to sneak away.
"Stop hiding, you little prick!"
The shove sent Miles stumbling forward wildly.
His shoulder slammed violently into Yvonne.
Yvonne pitched sideways.
Her arms flew out instinctively—
And then—
"Ahhh!"
A piercing scream tore from her throat.
She clutched her stomach desperately, her body going limp as she collapsed back into the wheelchair.
"My stomach... it hurts so much..."
Her face instantly drained of all color, turning deathly pale.
Zander's heart lurched. He immediately rushed over, crouching down to grab her shoulders.
He never looked back once.
Miriam stared blankly at the doors where he disappeared. Then her eyes darted around, and she too used the commotion to slip away quietly.
The lobby erupted into noise again.
Security guards finally arrived and dispersed the onlookers, but the whispers only grew louder.
"Get a nurse! Hurry!"
Ignoring the wheelchair, Zander scooped Yvonne up into his arms and sprinted toward the emergency department, shouting for a nurse the whole way.
An experienced triage nurse ran over immediately. She took Yvonne's hospital card from Zander and quickly pulled up her patient file on the system.
But as the nurse stared at the screen, her fingers suddenly stopped.
She glanced up at Yvonne, who was huddled in Zander's arms, clutching her stomach and crying out in pain.
Then she looked back down, double-checking the system records.
The screen clearly stated:
Yvonne Vance had no obstetrics records whatsoever.
The appointment she was registered for today was just a standard gynecology consultation.
