Julian gave a calm nod.
"Then it's settled. I'll pick you up when the time comes."
The car coasted smoothly down the avenue, the streetlights blurring past them one by one.
Eliza leaned back in her seat, quietly watching the city roll by.
She didn't ask any more questions, and Julian didn't press the conversation.
But her fingers moved slightly—brushing against the back of her phone case, tracing the sticky note pressed beneath the clear plastic.
That hand-drawn smiley face.
Her fingertips lingered for two seconds before pulling away.
Nobody noticed a thing.
...
The Roth Estate.
Early morning.
The rich aroma of herbal chicken broth drifted from the kitchen. The maid carried the therapeutic soup into the living room and carefully set it on the coffee table.
Yvonne was curled up on the sofa, wrapped tightly in a cream-colored blanket. The blue light from her phone screen cast harsh shadows across her face.
She was scrolling through Eliza's social media.
That 'Nirvana' choreography video was already pinned right at the top.
And climbing.
In the comment section, the top pinned reply read: "This girl is the best dancer I've ever seen! She danced straight into my soul!"
There were over twenty thousand likes beneath it.
She kept scrolling.
"Does anyone know who the choreographer is? We'd love to collaborate!"
"The angle design for those water sleeves is absolutely breathtaking. Every single frame is a painting."
"I've screenshotted so many of these, and every single one is wallpaper material."
Yvonne snatched up her phone, swiped away Eliza's profile, and opened her contacts. She scrolled down until she found the number for Amy, the manager at The Chelsea Dance Academy.
She tapped call.
It connected after two rings.
"Amy." Yvonne's voice instantly melted into something sweet, trailing off with a slightly helpless whine. "Are you busy lately?"
Amy sounded cautious on the other end. "Not at all, Yvonne. Is there something you need?"
"I just had a small favor to ask," Yvonne drawled slowly. "I'm dealing with some health complications right now, and the doctor mandated strict bed rest. I'm going to have to pause my classes for a while longer... Do you mind coordinating that for me? Just pass my annual VIP clients to the other instructors temporarily."
Amy let out a relieved breath. "Of course, of course, that's not a problem—"
"Oh, and one more thing." Yvonne paused, injecting a heavy dose of casual arrogance into her tone. "Eliza shouldn't have any major classes running right now, right? Why don't you go ahead and transfer her premium clients under my name? Even if I can't teach them myself right now, let them stay registered under me. My reputation speaks for itself, after all."
Dead silence stretched over the line for two seconds.
"Yvonne, I don't know if that's..."
"Amy," Yvonne continued, her sweet tone never wavering. "I am going to be Mrs. Roth. You know better than anyone how deep the Roth family's roots run in this city's business sector. Me bringing clients into your studio is going to benefit you infinitely more than some outsider like Eliza ever could. Am I wrong?"
She let that hang in the air before dropping a feather-light threat. "Of course, if you feel this arrangement doesn't work for you, and your studio ends up going under, I suppose I could always ask the Roths if they have a decent commercial space for you to relocate to..."
