Monique was supposed to become the Redson family’s daughter-in-law.
Her reputation could not be stained.
“Lia has already taken responsibility for everything. What more does Stella want?” Vivian demanded furiously.
If Stella had not insisted that they could not use some irrelevant outsider as a scapegoat, the Redson family would never have become involved at all.
Yet now, even after they had sacrificed Lia, Stella was still not satisfied.
She was forcing them to choose between Vivian and Monique.
“Why do you think?” Leon asked. “Have you forgotten that Monique is still in her hands?”
Without Monique, they naturally would not have had to obey Stella.
Unfortunately, Stella was holding her.
For now, whatever Stella demanded, they had little choice but to comply.
The reminder immediately extinguished half of Vivian’s fury.
But she was still seething.
“Stop pretending this is Stella’s idea. I’m sure Jennifer is the one behind it.”
What did any of this have to do with Stella?
If anyone was to blame, it was Jennifer.
This had to be what Jennifer wanted.
Leon fell silent.
If this really was Jennifer’s demand, then things were even more complicated.
“You handle it,” Vivian said.
Since she believed Jennifer was behind everything, she expected Leon to deal with her.
But neither Vivian nor Monique would be taking the blame.
If Monique was sacrificed, any possibility of her and Leon being together would be destroyed.
Vivian could not allow that to happen.
She absolutely could not.
After Vivian left, Leon called Jennifer.
But she had already blocked him.
He could not reach her at all.
With no other choice, he called Stella.
She answered.
“You only need to give me the result. I don’t need to hear how you reached your decision,” Stella said coldly, assuming he had finally made his choice.
“I want to speak to Jennifer.”
Anger tightened painfully in his chest.
For the first time, he began to understand why Evan had been willing to divorce Stella back then.
She could infuriate someone to the point of losing all reason.
In that state, Evan probably would have agreed to anything just to end the argument.
“Stop wasting your time and make your decision,” Stella said.
“It’s already been handled. Lia…”
“Lia is being torn apart by the public,” Stella cut in sharply. “She’s your biological sister.”
That was precisely why Stella refused to accept the outcome, even if Jennifer eventually softened.
Leon had sacrificed his own sister.
Stella knew all too well what it felt like to be betrayed and attacked by one’s own family.
She had never met Lia, but she still pitied her.
Leon’s breathing became strained on the other end of the line.
“Your own sister matters less than one of the boys?” Stella asked.
The words one of the boys were dripping with sarcasm.
That was what Leon had always claimed Monique was to him, after all.
