Felix had clearly sent the information to provoke Stella into confronting Evan.
The more furious she became, the more distracted Evan would be.
If Felix had gone to such lengths to throw him off balance, he was undoubtedly planning something against him.
On the other end of the call, Felix let out a low laugh.
“After everything you did to Stella in Harbor City, I thought you were an idiot.”
“What man with any sense would hurt his wife so badly over his brother’s widow?”
“But now I understand. You weren’t stupid. You simply never thought Stella was worth the effort.”
Clearly, Evan was perfectly capable of thinking things through.
Stella had only just confronted him, and he had already realized Felix was planning something.
“So it really was you,” Evan said coldly.
“Shouldn’t you be blaming yourself instead?”
“Felix.”
“You know how much Stella hates your mother, yet once again, you chose to ignore her feelings.”
Learning that Evan had arranged for Dora and Fiona to live comfortably in prison was like driving a knife straight into Stella’s heart.
They were her enemies.
Yet Evan claimed he would never let Stella go while making sure the people she hated were well cared for.
“Your mother is Stella’s enemy, Evan. Do you understand what that means?”
And still, he kept insisting he would never release her.
Had he not already understood in Harbor City that this alone had made a future between them impossible?
Why was he suddenly refusing to let go now?
It made no sense.
And Felix hated it.
“What does any of this have to do with you?” Evan demanded.
He already knew all of it.
He did not need Felix to remind him.
But hearing the words from Felix still made his chest tighten painfully.
The words struck Evan exactly where it hurt most.
He knew Stella’s heart was no longer his.
He knew that better than anyone.
But so what?
He still wanted to keep her beside him.
Felix’s words made it difficult for him to breathe.
“If you refuse the exchange,” Felix said, “your sister may die.”
May.
It was not certain.
But the word die hit Evan with crushing force.
His chest suddenly felt hollow.
Would he really have to trade Stella to get Yara back?
And if he refused, would Yara truly die?
