This time, Stella did not respond to Evan’s apology.
There was nothing left to say.
Her silence only made the pressure in his chest feel heavier, as though a stone had lodged there.
Neither of them spoke again for the rest of the journey.
Not until they reached Eirden.
Aaron had sent men to wait at the airport, but Evan never appeared there with Stella.
His men found nothing.
While Aaron was still furious, Evan called him.
“You know Desert Ridge in the eastern outskirts?”
Aaron was at the castle.
His eyes sharpened at Evan’s words.
“What are you playing at?”
Had they landed somewhere else?
That should have been impossible.
Aaron’s people had been monitoring the airport the entire time. Every aircraft entering Eirden that day had been watched.
Evan should not have been able to slip past them and leave the city unnoticed.
“Bring Yara there,” Evan said.
“How did you get there?”
“You don’t need to worry about that.”
Evan’s voice was icy. He had no intention of explaining anything.
The words worry about that sounded almost like a deliberate taunt.
Aaron let out a cold laugh.
“It seems I underestimated you.”
“I know you never intended to exchange Yara for Stella,” Evan said. “But if there’s something you want, you’ll have to give something up.”
Just as Evan had.
If he wanted Yara back safely, he had to accept losing Stella.
At least temporarily.
It was a matter of priorities.
Right now, Yara’s situation was more urgent.
If Evan had to prepare himself to lose Stella for the time being, then Aaron would have to lose Yara completely.
Aaron glanced at him but said nothing.
“What are you going to do now?” Felix asked. “Trade Yara for her?”
Yara.
Felix could already tell that Aaron had never intended to let her leave.
He had not expected Evan to see through him so quickly.
Evan clearly would not leave Stella behind until he had seen Yara and taken custody of her himself.
Aaron thought of Yara’s current condition and felt a headache coming on.
He truly had not expected Evan to make a move like this.
He rubbed the bridge of his nose.
“Stella is far too headstrong.”
His tone carried the exasperation of an older brother dealing with a difficult younger sister.
If Stella had simply returned willingly, none of this would have happened.
Felix said nothing.
He had always understood Stella’s nature.
And in this situation, none of the blame belonged to her.
