Stella could be viciously sharp-tongued when she wanted to be.
And this was one of those times.
She spoke without the slightest mercy, each word cutting deep enough to make a person’s chest ache.
Stella glanced at Felix.
“Jennifer’s leaving tomorrow. She won’t tell anyone about us.”
Her meaning was obvious.
Don’t touch Jennifer.
As long as Jennifer remained in Sima Mountain, Stella couldn’t be sure Felix wouldn’t lose control and do something to her.
Felix’s grip tightened around his knife and fork.
Then he smiled.
“You’re really that afraid I’ll hurt her?”
Stella said nothing.
Felix continued, “You can’t even give me that little bit of trust?”
Seeing how important Jennifer was to Stella left a bitter feeling in his chest.
Anyone could matter more to her than he did.
And Felix...
No matter how hard he tried now, it seemed impossible to earn even the smallest place in her heart.
Stella remained silent.
Trust?
How could there possibly be trust between them?
People said that when two people truly trusted each other, even after going through terrible things, some part of that trust would remain.
But after everything that had happened between Stella and Felix, there was nothing left to salvage.
Felix put down his utensils.
“I can make sure she leaves safely. But you have to promise me one thing.”
Stella’s expression cooled.
Here we go again.
Men like Felix, people used to getting whatever they wanted, could be unbelievably selfish when it suited them.
They didn’t care how the other person felt as long as they reached their goal.
Felix knew perfectly well how much Stella hated being threatened.
And yet he was still doing it.
“What?” she asked.
“Try to accept me.”
His voice softened.
“Try to trust me again.”
There was a hint of pleading in his tone now, something that had never existed there before.
But Felix truly seemed to be running out of options.
