Shouldn’t Evan stop and think about exactly how he and Stella had ended up like this in the first place?
“I’m just telling the truth. You…”
Ivy pressed a hand to her forehead.
Her head hurt.
Evan decided he never should have answered Amos’s call.
That mouth of his really needed to be sewn shut.
Such a perfectly good face, ruined by a mouth like that.
Furious, Evan hung up.
On the other end, Amos stared at his phone as the line went dead.
“What did I say this time?”
It always ended like this.
If Evan was standing in front of him, he would give Amos a dark look.
If he wasn’t, he would just hang up.
Seriously difficult to deal with.
Ivy sighed.
“Why did you have to tell him his family wasn’t full of good people?”
Who could stand hearing that about their own family?
Amos frowned.
“But it’s true. Just look at how the Wright family treated Summer before.”
“If they had been decent people, Evan and Stella never would’ve ended up like this.”
Ivy looked at him.
“They’re still his family. Good or bad, they’re his family.”
And when it came to family, most people couldn’t tolerate outsiders saying a single bad word.
“Exactly. That kind of thinking is why he and Stella ended up like that.”
To put it bluntly, Evan had always put his family above everything else.
Ivy fell silent.
That really was part of the problem.
But this was hardly the time to say it.
“No wonder people say you have zero emotional intelligence.”
Not just emotional intelligence. Apparently, he was short on actual intelligence too. The man had neither IQ nor EQ.
Amos sighed.
“He won’t listen. If Aaron really loses it, he’ll kill him.”
Ivy gave him a look.
“Didn’t we agree before coming here that you weren’t going to worry about Evan anymore?”
Amos went quiet.
They had agreed.
But now that things had actually reached this point, he couldn’t help worrying.
They had been friends for too many years.
And Amos knew Evan was practically walking into his own death.
