Chapter 1236

Her phone buzzed.

It was Evan.

The moment Stella saw the number, her eyes turned cold.

She glanced at Remi, then picked up the phone and walked a short distance away before answering.

“You didn’t come back.”

Before Stella could say anything, Evan’s furious voice came through the line.

The hostility in his tone was so intense it felt like he wanted to tear her apart.

“Or are you too scared to come back?”

His voice turned even colder.

Stella almost laughed.

“Scared?”

The word sounded ridiculous to her.

“What exactly do I have to be scared of?”

She had simply been exhausted lately.

She was tired of being dragged into one conflict after another.

That didn’t mean she was afraid.

And now Evan was accusing her of being too scared to return to Harbor City?

“Then why haven’t you come back?” Evan demanded through clenched teeth.

“Don’t you know why?” Stella replied coldly. “Because I hate Harbor City.”

The disgust came from somewhere deep inside her.

Evan went silent.

On the other end of the line, he froze at the sheer revulsion in her voice.

“You…”

“Evan, don’t tell me you actually think I feel guilty over what happened to your family.”

Evan said nothing.

Stella let out a cold laugh.

“Yes, the truth turned out to be different from what I believed. So what?”

Her voice hardened.

“They were casualties of a fight, that’s all. The Wright family wasn’t wronged. They lost.”

“Stella Rowan!”

Evan roared her name.

Her complete lack of remorse sent his anger surging.

She actually…

“They did plenty to me too,” Stella continued. “I fought back. That’s all.

“Do you seriously expect me to feel guilty because they died?”

Maybe she had.

For a brief moment, when she first learned that her mother’s death had not actually been caused by the Wright family, guilt had crossed her mind.

She had even thought that perhaps giving Evan her life was the only way to settle everything once and for all.

But now…

Stella had finally come to her senses.

The Wright family had never been innocent.

They had never been good people either:

And almost all of their cruelty had been directed at her.

So what if the reason behind her revenge had been wrong?

So what if they had died because of it?

“You…”

On the other end of the line, Evan’s breathing turned ragged.

His face darkened instantly.

Stella’s voice remained cold.

“And come back?

“From the moment I left Harbor City, I never planned to return.”

No matter what happened outside, she had never once considered going back.

Harbor City had never been a place she could retreat to.

She had never thought of it as one.

“Is that so?” Evan asked.

“Yes.”

Stella didn’t hesitate.

“So stop thinking I’m drowning in guilt over what happened to the Wright family.

“I’m not.”

Maybe she had been for one brief moment.

But now?

Nothing remained.

Every trace of guilt had disappeared.

Before Evan could say anything else, Stella ended the call.

Evan listened to the disconnected tone, furious enough to nearly smash his phone.

Just then, Zane walked in.

“Sir.”

“Speak.”
