Chapter 1281
When Stella arrived, Michael was still on the phone with Aaron.
The moment he saw her walk in, his expression darkened even further.
“You’re staying at the estate tonight?”
“Yes.”
“Then you should spend what little time you have left with that woman.”
With that, Michael hung up.
But when he turned to Stella, his expression softened instantly, his eyes full of warmth and affection.
“Why aren’t you sleeping at home? Did your brother bother you?”
“Not exactly.”
Seeing Aaron had just annoyed her.
Especially now that his relationship with Yara had somehow led him to drag Evan into things and bother Stella about him.
Stella pulled out a chair beside the hospital bed and sat down.
Michael glanced at her.
“The separate house will be ready soon. Once it is, you won’t have to run into him at home anymore.”
“Thank you, Dad.”
“Silly girl. It’s your home. Of course you should live there however makes you comfortable.”
Comfortable.
That word surprised Stella more than she expected.
She had always assumed that in a family like the Hogarths, personal comfort simply wasn’t something anyone
cared about.
Her gaze drifted to the fruit platter nearby.
There were yellow peaches on it, one of her favorites.
She stood and picked one up.
“Want me to peel one for you?”
“No. Those are your favorite. You eat them.”
Stella paused.
He knew?

Her brows shifted slightly in surprise.
Michael was always so busy.
She had assumed there were countless little things about her that he simply wouldn’t know.
Especially something even Evan had never figured out.
She had been with Evan for so long, yet he had always thought her favorite fruit was kiwi.
Felix, though…
Felix knew she loved peaches too.
Back when they were staying near Sima Mountain, even with heavy snow piling up outside, there had always been peaches in the house.
She hadn’t had much of an appetite then.
But she still ate one almost every day.
“What are you thinking about?”
When Stella remained quiet, Michael frowned slightly.
Stella looked down at the peach in her hand.
“Everyone says I was too ruthless when it came to Evan.”
“That I went too far with the Wright family.”
Michael’s expression immediately darkened at the mention of Evan.
Stella continued quietly,
“But I really did try at first.”
No one became coldhearted and ruthless for no reason.
Sometimes people were simply pushed so far that fighting back became the only thing left to do.
Michael looked at her.
“They tried to kill you again and again, didn’t they?”
“Yes.”
“They wanted me dead.”
Back then, while she was with the Wright family, Evan had been the only person Stella could rely on.
And what had he given her in return?
Nothing but disappointment.
