Chapter 189
He did care about his late brother’s child.
But some things couldn’t be solved with a single order. Especially not wherrit came to someone like Jane Gass, who was notoriously difficult.
Even if his people found her, they would still have to convince her.
And all of that would take time.
“It has to be soon,” the doctor pressed. “The little boy’s condition is very bad.”
“I know.”
Summer’s crying seemed even louder now, full of panic and grief.
Evan hung up.
When he turned around, Stella was gone from the doorway.
He let out a bitter laugh. “She’s…”
It had just been one phone call, and she reacted that strongly.
She kept saying she had no feelings for him anymore, but the second a call came in about Summer, she got
upset.
After all this…
Other than wanting a divorce, didn’t she still care about him at least a little?
When Evan walked back inside, he heard Marianne asking Stella what she wanted for dinner.
Stella replied, “I wouldn’t dare eat anything from the Wright family now.’
Yesterday, Old Mrs. Wright had someone poison her food. Who knew which member of the family might try something next today?
Living with a family like this really was bad luck.
“And besides, I ate a pretty filling lunch. I’m not hungry.”
The moment she said lunch, Evan’s face darkened.
Lunch. The lunch she had with Felix.
How much had Felix fed her that she could sit here now and say she wasn’t hungry?
“Sounds like you really enjoyed lunch with Felix.”
Evan strode inside and sat down beside her.
ľ
Then he grabbed her and pulled her straight onto his lap, locking both arms around her so tightly she couldn’t get away.

Stella struggled again.
“Let go of me.
Evan looked at her. “Tell me. Did having lunch with Felix make you happy?”
Stella, furious, lifted her hand to slap him again.
But after taking so many slaps today, Evan had no intention of letting her land another one.
He caught her wrist and pinned it down.
“You know I won’t really hurt you, so you think you can do whatever you want, don’t you?”
His voice was light, but there was something deeply unhinged underneath it.
If anyone else had dared slap him like this, they’d have been dead already.
His fingers slowly tightened around her wrist.
“You’re this disobedient, and I still can’t bear to hurt you. What am I supposed to do with you, hmm?”
Stella looked at him with open disgust. “You make me sick.”
Evan froze.
“And these past six months, you couldn’t bear to let Summer suffer either, could you?”
That was the only explanation that made sense.
If he really didn’t care, how could one phone call pull him away every time?
At her words, Evan actually laughed. “Jealous?”
Smack.
The second he said jealous, Stella’s other hand came down hard across his face.
Evan: “!!!”
Stella snapped, “I’m jealous of your damn father.”
Even now, in a situation like this, he could still laugh?
She wanted out. She wanted nothing to do with him anymore.
And he was still here fantasizing about jealousy.
The disgust hit so hard she cursed outright.
Evan let out a low laugh. “If you’re not jealous, then what’s with that tone, hmm?”
