Chapter 204

When Stella woke up, her head still felt heavy and foggy.

Evan was sitting beside the hospital bed, a cigarette between his fingers, unlit.

Hearing her stir, he looked over at her. His eyes were deep, dark, and unreadable.

The look made Stella’s chest tighten. “Am I in a hospital?”

She glanced down at herself. She was wearing a hospital gown.

Evan said, “Do you want to be discharged now?”

Stella raised a brow. “Why?”

“You don’t like the smell of disinfectant. If we go back to Mount Lara, you’ll be more comfortable.”

His tone was gentle. Too gentle.

Stella didn’t respond right away. She just stared at him.

Since when did he know what she liked or didn’t like?

That was new.

Evan reached out and brushed his hand lightly over her pale cheek. “Do you want to go?”

“You can go by yourself,” Stella said coldly.

Evan let out a quiet laugh. “Leave on my own? So the second I walk out, you disappear again?”

He had made up his mind. From now on, he wasn’t letting her vanish from his sight again.

Hadn’t it happened just like that last time? The moment he left, she was gone.

Not again.

Hearing that, Stella’s expression darkened. “What did the doctor say?”

Evan froze.

For a split second, his face went rigid. His fingers tightened around the cigarette, crushing the filter slightly.

But it passed just as quickly.

“Nothing serious,” he said. “Just told you to get plenty of rest.”

“That’s it?”

Evan nodded. “That’s it.”

“Which hospital is this?”

“The women’s and children’s hospital.”

Since it wasn’t the same hospital as before, a flicker of suspicion crossed Stella’s mind.

So this place hadn’t told Evan the truth either?

Or had the doctor here been bought off by Summer and tier mother too?

If that was the case…

Then maybe she hadn’t gone far enough with what she’d done to them.

Maybe Summer’s mother still had too much room to stir up trouble.

Evan noticed she had gone quiet. “Do you want to go back?”

Stella paused.

Go back?

She really did hate the smell of disinfectant.

But looking at Evan… –

“How long was I out?”

“Three or four hours.”

Stella fell silent.

Three or four hours. And he had stayed here the whole time.

So now he was waiting for her to wake up?

Putting on this act like he was afraid she’d disappear again. Who was that supposed to be for?

“If you don’t want to go back,” Evan added, “I can have Patrick bring the documents here.”

“I’m going back,” Stella snapped. “Why wouldn’t I?”

She hated the smell here.

And his behavior wasn’t moving her at all. If anything, it was starting to irritate her.

At her answer, Evan stood up. He tossed the untouched cigarette into the trash.

Then he bent down and picked her up, wrapping his coat around her as he did.

He carried her all the way to the car.
