Chapter 242

Because Ruby had managed to latch onto Arthur Nevin in Eirden, both mother and daughter thought the crisis there was about to blow over.
And just like that-
Their arrogance came back.
Summer regained all the reckless confidence she’d been missing.
After Fiona left, Summer received a call from Ruby.
“Don’t worry,” Ruby said over the phone. “Things on my end in Eirden are almost settled.”
“Really? That’s great.
The moment she heard that, Summer’s mood instantly lifted.
Not long ago, when it looked like the situation in Eirden couldn’t be handled, Dora’s attitude toward her had shifted so obviously it was almost humiliating.
A woman really ‘needed’ a strong family behind her.
With a powerful backing, even your in-laws wouldn’t dare mistreat you.
Ruby’s voice turned sharp. “I heard from Mrs. Mendes that you cut your wrist?”
She clearly wasn’t pleased.
Summer’s heart tightened. “Mom, you don’t understand. Ever since you left, the way they’ve treated me-”
Her voice trailed off.
Ruby already knew what she meant and let out a cold scoff. “I told you long ago your mother-in-law wasn’t a good person. You didn’t believe me. You insisted she treated you like her own daughter.”
She knew Dora’s type all too well.
୮
On the surface, she looked warm and refined, but underneath she was calculating, always stirring up trouble in other people’s families.
The only reason she had treated Summer well was because of ‘her’.
Summer lowered her voice. “I have to stay with Evan. You know that. It’s not just because I like him.”
There were benefits involved.
With Steven gone, many of his assets and interests were tied to Evan.
If she stayed by Evan’s side, those benefits would naturally fall into her hands.
Including… the Wright Group.

Ruby hesitated. “But the public opinion in there is very unfavorable to you right now. If you stay with him
“Public opinion is controlled by people,” Summer cut in sharply. “And people forget.”
Right now, the entire city was tearing her apart.
The insults were relentless.
But she had to endure it.
“So what if they curse me?” she said. “Give it time, and they’ll move on.
Ruby paused. “You like Evan that much?”
“Yes,” Summer said firmly. “I do.”
Ruby fell silent.
Hearing that unwavering tone, she didn’t argue further.
And with things in Eirden seemingly under control, her mood had improved too.
Her opposition softened.
“If you can handle it, then do what you want.
Summer finally let out a breath of relief.
Honestly, what she feared most was her mother refusing.
