Clearly…
The moment Jennifer mentioned Leon’s childhood friend, there had even been a flicker of guilt in his
eyes.
He had never told Jennifer about her.
Or maybe, when they were together, Leon had never considered theirs the kind of relationship where he needed to tell her everything.
“She and I are just like best friends,” Leon said.
Jennifer stared at him.
Best friends?
A man and a woman?
What kind of relationship was that supposed to be?
Seeing that Jennifer did not believe him, Leon grew even more anxious.
“You don’t know her. She’s loud, carefree, and completely unladylike. She’s lived overseas for years, and all her friends are men.”
Jennifer said nothing.
“And you want to break up with me over that?”
“Isn’t that enough?”
“I swear, I don’t feel that way about her. Baby, you have to believe me.”
Leon had thought Jennifer wanted to break up because of the hundred dollars.
That problem was easy enough to solve.
What scared him was the possibility that there was something else behind it.
And there was.
But once he realized it was about Monique, he felt a little relieved.
If his mother had used some other woman to make Jennifer back off, he would have had a much bigger problem.
But Monique?
That tomboy?

“It doesn’t matter whether you like her or not,” Jennifer said. “Your family likes her. That’s enough.”
That was the part that hurt most.
No matter who a man loved, it seemed no one could compete with the woman his family wanted him to
marry.
“What does it matter if they like her?” Leon said. “I’m the one marrying you, not them. You don’t need to worry about what they think.”
Leon saw the problem too simply.
His parents had spent years barely tolerating each other because neither of them had married the person they truly wanted.
From the outside, they were still together.
But in reality, they lived separate lives.
Leon had hated that kind of marriage since he was young.
He had always promised himself that when he grew up, he would marry a woman he loved and build a family with her.
That way, their children would not have to suffer too.
All he had ever felt from his parents‘ cold, empty marriage was distance and indifference.
He hated it.
He hated it deeply.
Leon reached over and lightly pinched Jennifer’s cheek.
“Are you really this angry?”
The hundred dollars.
And Monique.
Jennifer had every right to be upset.
But she could not take her anger out on the baby.
Thinking about how determined she had been to end the pregnancy earlier, Leon’s face darkened again.
“Jennifer, the baby is innocent. You understand that, right?”
There was a trace of pain beneath his words.
But Jennifer was too consumed by the frustration of seeing where this would all lead to notice it.
