If Stella had not gone through everything with Evan, she probably would never have given Jennifer this advice.
But she had.
And after that ordeal, she saw things far more clearly.
“You’re right,” Jennifer said. “Leon never seriously tried to contain the scandal. All he could say was that those people couldn’t get inside the house.”
“What, does someone have to physically attack me before he considers it real harm?”
Just thinking about what Leon had said made her blood boil.
Jennifer drew in a deep breath.
“You’re right. Even if I want revenge, I need to get away from him first.”
Back then, Stella had focused all her energy on getting revenge against Summer.
And Evan had seemed so exhausted by their constant fighting that he kept acting as though he wanted a divorce.
Who could have known he would turn everything around on her in the end?
Now, instead of being legally divorced, Stella was listed as a widow.
Even in death, Evan had managed to leave one final tie between them.
Jennifer needed to make sure Leon did not do something similar to her.
And she could not afford to keep waiting with the pregnancy either.
Leon was deliberately dragging things out.
“Do you understand now?” Stella asked.
“I do.”
Jennifer had originally believed she could not let Monique get away with turning the entire city against her.
But Stella’s warning had changed her mind.
Even if Jennifer intended to strike back, she could not stay there and let those people wear her down.
Getting herself out safely had to come first.
“We can’t afford any mistakes this time,” Jennifer said. “I’m leaving it to you.”
“All right,” Stella replied. “Leon is too distracted to watch you properly right now.”
Going after Monique first had been the right move.
With all of Leon’s attention focused on her, he would have no time to worry about Jennifer.
That gave Stella’s people an opening.
“Stella is nothing but trouble. What good could possibly come from Jennifer spending time with her?”
Of all the things Jennifer could learn from Stella, she had chosen the worst ones.
Then again, as far as Leon was concerned, Stella had nothing good to teach her in the first place.
Jennifer had certainly picked up plenty of her ruthless methods.
Lucas stared at him.
“No, seriously, what are you…”
He did not even know how to respond to Leon criticizing Stella like that.
“Am I wrong?” Leon demanded. “Evan is dead, and she doesn’t look the slightest bit upset.”
“You know what Evan did to her. Why would you expect her to grieve for him?”
Lucas was genuinely baffled.
“And when Evan was alive, you didn’t agree with the way he treated her either. So why are you suddenly acting exactly like him now that he’s dead?”
Back when Evan had repeatedly hurt Stella, none of them had supported him.
They had always told him he needed to stop trying to balance Summer and Stella as though both women could hold equal places in his life.
