Chapter 109 A Fragile Hope

“Agnes… sob… sob… Rebecca’s voice shook as she cried.

Agnes held her hand tightly and spoke in a soft, steady voice. “Rebecca, I’m here. It’s okay. You just have a fever. Nothing serious.”

“I’m so scared, Agnes… sob…” Rebecca whispered.

“Scared of what?” Agnes asked gently. “I’m right here. You’ll be fine. How did you suddenly get a fever? Do you feel bad anywhere else?”

Rebecca felt a deep, painful sadness rise in her chest. She didn’t dare tell Agnes about the fight with Ethan at the bar the night before.

Agnes had warned her so many times. But she didn’t listen. She had fallen too deep for Ethan.

If she told Agnes the truth, Agnes would never let Ethan get away with it.

But Rebecca loved him too much. She couldn’t leave him. Even if he ignored her, even if he hurt her, she still wanted to stay with him.

She swallowed her pain and said through tears, “Agnes, I was just scared… scared I might never see you again. I… I got caught in the rain last night. I thought I was fine, so I didn’t care. I’m sorry for making you worry…”

Agnes sighed softly. “Don’t say silly things, Rebecca. You… do you know you’re pregnant?”

Rebecca froze.

Pregnant? Her heart jumped with sudden joy. This was her and Ethan’s baby.

If Ethan knew, would he be just as happy?

He was the only son in his family. If she were pregnant, his family would accept the child. And they would definitely get married.

Rebecca’s pale face quickly turned red. Her eyes lit up. She looked much more alive.

Ignoring Agnes’s concern, she pushed herself up from the bed and grabbed her phone. There were still no messages from Ethan.

She felt a little disappointed. But it didn’t matter. Once she told him the news, everything would go back to the way it used to be. He would care for her again.

Agnes watched her and realized something. Rebecca didn’t know she was pregnant before this. Which meant Ethan didn’t know either.

Agnes felt uneasy. She asked carefully, “Rebecca, now that you’re pregnant, have you thought about what you’ll do next?”

Rebecca didn’t mention the breakup at all. Instead, she smiled a little, almost excited.

“Ethan told me before that he’d marry me after we graduate. Now that I’m pregnant, he’ll definitely be very happy.”

Agnes wanted to say something. But seeing how happy Rebecca looked, she hoped she was just overthinking.

After Agnes left, Rebecca couldn’t wait any longer. She called Ethan.

She called again and again-almost ten times-before he finally picked up. His voice sounded impatient. “What now?”

Rebecca spoke carefully, almost afraid. “Ethan… I’m sick. I’m in the hospital. Can you come see me?”

At that moment, Ethan was lying in bed with another woman in his arms.

He frowned. “I’m busy right now. I’ll come later.”

Rebecca hesitated. “Then… what time? I… I have good news to tell you…”

“I said later, didn’t I?!” he snapped. “I’m hanging up!”

“Hello? Ethan? Etha-”

Beep. Beep. Beep. The call was already cut off.

Rebecca tried to stay calm and called again. This time, the phone was already turned off.

She stared at the screen, feeling lost. She didn’t dare push too hard. Last time, Ethan almost broke up with her. That fear still stayed with her.

That night, Ethan didn’t come to the hospital.

The next day, he didn’t come either.

Days passed, and he never showed up once. Whenever Agnes asked about it, Rebecca always made excuses for him.

“He’s busy with school.” “Something came up at home.” But she would always add, “He calls me. He lets me know what’s going on.”

Agnes felt something was off, but Rebecca insisted everything was fine. Agnes didn’t press further.

After all, she wasn’t Rebecca’s parent. She was a friend… a close friend… and also her boss. It wasn’t her place to interfere too much in their relationship.

Soon, it was time for Rebecca to leave the hospital. Agnes came to pick her up in person.

But when she walked into the room, the bed was empty.

Just as she was about to ask a nurse, she heard a woman crying in the bathroom.

The crying was so painful, so broken. It sounded like she was talking to someone, too, not noticing anyone
