Agnes said angrily, “He’s Rebecca’s boyfriend. He’s a total jerk. I can’t believe how twisted he is. And Rebecca still treats him like he’s everything. Neal, just leave frim alone. Someone will deal with him sooner or later.”
Not far away, hidden in a corner they couldn’t see, Rebecca stood frozen. Her face was wet with tears. Her whole body felt stiff.
She had seen everything. She had heard everything.
She couldn’t reach Ethan on the phone, so she approached campus to find him. That was when she ran into him, talking to Agnes.
At first, she wanted to walk over and say hi. But then she heard something she never wanted to hear in her life. She stopped where she was, too scared to take another step.
Ethan had confessed to Agnes. He even kissed her.
Rebecca stood there, stunned. Her mind buzzed like it was about to explode. Every cruel word Ethan had said about her echoed in her ears.
Why? Why would he confess to Agnes? And he said he had liked Agnes from the very beginning?
Then what was she to him? What did all those sweet words mean? All that care he showed her, what was it?
It felt like a thunderstorm crashed right inside her chest. She could barely breathe. A heavy weight pressed down on her, and all she felt was bitterness.
So this was why Ethan had pulled away from her. Why he got tired of her. Why he didn’t want her anymore or their child.
But why did it have to be Agnes? The person she loved the most. The one she trusted the most.
Rebecca had grown up in a poor, harsh place. Life had never been kind to her. No one had ever truly cared
for her.
She longed for love. For family. She held onto those things like they were treasure, even if they felt out of reach.
She lived carefully, always afraid of losing the little she had.
That was why she loved Ethan, so deeply. So blindly.
But
the other person was Agnes. And she didn’t know how to face her. Her thoughts were a mess.
Rebecca walked back to her small apartment in a daze. Her phone kept ringing. Agnes’s name flashed on the screen again and again. She didn’t pick up. Not once.
Before long, Agnes showed up at the apartment. She had been worried when Rebecca didn’t answer.
Rebecca sat on the bed and watched quietly. Agnes moved around the place, cleaning up, doing laundry,

She even bought supplements and inade sure Rebecca ate properly Rebecca’s nose stung, and her eyes filled with tears again.
Agnes was only a few years older than her, but she felt like a big sister. Like a mother. She took care of her in every way.
Rebecca did care about what happened with Ethan. But when she saw how kind Agnes was to her, Rebecca felt like she had no right to blame her.
Her heart was torn in two.
After a while, Agnes came back from the kitchen with a bowl of chicken soup. She sat by the bed and fed Rebecca one spoonful at a time.
Rebecca drank quietly, but her tears kept falling, drop by drop.
Agnes set the bowl aside, pulled out a tissue, and gently wiped her face. “Hey, why are you crying all of a sudden?”
Rebecca sniffed. “Agnes… no one has ever been this kind to me. I just… feel like crying.”
Agnes patted her back softly. She knew Rebecca had a hard past.
The first time she saw her, that lost look in Rebecca’s eyes reminded her of herself, back when her mother had just passed away. She was alone, with no one to lean on.
Maybe it was because they understood each other. Maybe it was just fate. Agnes had come to see Rebecca as family, like a younger sister.
They had kept each other warm through hard times. They had stood by each other through everything.
Agnes smiled a little. “Come on, don’t cry. Your eyes are going to get all swollen.”
Rebecca let out a small laugh through her tears. “Agnes, I really envy you. It feels like everyone likes you.”
Agnes blinked, surprised. “What are you talking about? Who likes me?”
Rebecca counted on her fingers. “Mr. Newton. Mr. Ruell. Me. And a lot of others.”
She paused, swallowing the words she really wanted to say-Ethan. The man she loved the most.
Agnes shook her head with a smile. “You’re just teasing me. You have plenty of people who like you too. Rebecca. Forget the people who hurt you. Forget the things that make you sad. Just live your life well, okay? I’ll be right there with you.”
Rebecca smiled softly. “Okay.”
