Chapter 134 With Him
Agnes stayed quiet for a moment before she spoke. “I’m sorry. I should’ve listened to you i should ver back to Grandridge the first day.”
Raymond turned over and propped himself up on his side, watching her. His hand moved gently over the bruises on her skin. For once, Agnes didn’t flinch or
pull away.
Raymond said, “I should be the one apologizing. If I’d come for you that first day and brought you hom you wouldn’t have had to go through all this. Does it still hurt?”
Agnes’s eyes stung. “It’s a lot better. Thank you. Thank you for coming to get me.”
Raymond let out a soft laugh. “You’re so ridiculous. Why are you thanking me? Tomorrow I’m taking you back to Grandridge.”
Agnes looked at him, and her heart twisted. In this entire world, the only people who ever made her feel safe were her mom and, somehow, this man who had broken her heart.
Raymond noticed her tears. “Why are you crying again?”
He tried to pull Agnes into his arms, but she instinctively moved away, putting some space between them.
Raymond stared at her in silence.
A long pause passed before Agnes finally spoke. “Why haven’t you asked me why I came to Velmara?”
Raymond replied, “Someone tricked you.”
Agnes’s eyes widened. “You knew?”
Raymond kept his gaze fixed on her. There was a tenderness in his eyes that he couldn’t hide.
“Of course I knew. That’s why I came for you. Otherwise, how else would I have shown up right after your call?”
Agnes dropped her gaze, shame creeping in. She felt exposed, as if all her mistakes had been laid out for
him to see.
Agnes said, “I was careless. I trusted people too easily.”
Raymond’s voice was low. “Remember this. From now on, don’t trust anyone except me.”
Agnes nodded, but she couldn’t help but wonder. Did Raymond know about her being Aurora?
He didn’t seem sure. The more she thought about it, the more she realized that with him, he rarely asked or said much, but he always seemed to know everything.
Suddenly, something clicked in her mind. She shot upright.
“No, I need to call Rebecca. She’s probably worried sick. She’s pregnant, too.”
She started searching for her phone, ready to call Rebecca. Before she could dial, Raymond’s hand reached

over and snatched the phone out of her grasp.
Agnes glared at him. “What are you doing?”
Raymond said, “Did you forget what I just told you? Don’t trust anyone but me.”
Agnes stared at him, confused. She could hear a double meaning in his words, and a strange panic started welling up inside her.
She demanded, “Raymond, what do you mean?”
Raymond just looked at her, silent.
Agnes’s frustration boiled over. “Rebecca is nothing like the others. She would never lie to me. You don’t know her, Raymond. Give me my phone back. I don’t want her to worry.”
Raymond held the phone out of her reach, letting her struggle to get it back.
Raymond said, “Really? Are you sure you know her at all?”
Agnes snapped, “Of course I do. We’ve known each other for years. She’s like a sister to me. We’ve been through so much together. You can suspect anyone else, but if you accuse her of trying to hurt me, I’ll never forgive you.”
Raymond asked, “Who sent you to Velmara?”
Agnes fired back, “It has nothing to do with her. She got tricked just like I did. She would never hurt me. When I was in trouble, she was the one trying to get people from the embassy to help.”
Raymond’s eyes narrowed. “Did you see anyone from the embassy?”
Agnes froze for a second. She realized she hadn’t seen anyone from the embassy this whole time. But she couldn’t bring herself to doubt Rebecca, not even a little.
All these years, she had given Rebecca her entire trust. Rebecca was not some heartless traitor. That was impossible.
Agnes muttered, “Maybe the embassy couldn’t find where I was…”
Raymond said, “Mrs. Quinn is someone Hillary found. Rebecca also went to Hillary for help.”
Agnes felt like she’d been struck. Shock flooded through her, and the anxiety she’d tried to suppress surged back.
‘Her mind whirled with questions. Was all of this Hillary’s doing? Hadn’t she left Grandridge?
Wasn’t she Raymond’s one true love? Why would Raymond tell her it was Hillary? Did they have a falling
out?
