Love After Leaving: No Regret (Agnes and Raymond) novel Chapter 140

Chapter 140 Tears and Half-Truths

“I’m so sorry. I let you down. I’m so sorry.”

The other staff members exchanged confused glances. None of them knew Agnes had been in Veimara.

Rebecca had never mentioned it. She had simply continued coming to the studio as usual, handling Tidewhisper Lily’s business, explaining that Agnes was occupied with other matters and would be scarce for a while.

No one had questioned it. Agnes had always worked that way. She rarely showed up in person. communicating instead through messages and calls.

Agnes looked at Rebecca, at the tears that wouldn’t stop, at the swell of her stomach pressing against the fabric of her dress. Whatever doubts had taken root in her chest softened, just slightly.

She steadied Rebecca with a hand on her arm, greeted the others briefly, and guided her into the inner office.

‘Enough crying,” Agnes said gently. “You’re pregnant. I’m back. Everything’s fine.”

Rebecca’s eyes were red, her voice still unsteady. “I can’t stop blaming myself. You’ve been so good to me. and I almost got you killed.

‘If something had happened to you… I don’t think I could go on.”

Agnes pulled a tissue from the box on the desk and wiped away her tears. “Consider it a lesson for both of is. From now on, any commission like that gets triple the vetting.”

Rebecca nodded quickly, sniffing as she tried to compose herself. “Was it the embassy? Were they the ones who found you? You didn’t get hurt, did you?”

‘I’m fine,” Agnes replied with a faint smile. “Tougher than I look.”

She did not answer the first question. Rebecca noticed. A flicker of curiosity passed through her eyes.

If she hadn’t notified the embassy, and Agnes hadn’t contacted them herself, then how had she gotten out? Luck? She had simply walked out on her own?

She leaned forward slightly. “Did you escape on your own? What were those people like? Were they as terrifying as everyone says?”

“Raymond came for me. I never saw anyone from the embassy.”

Agnes watched her closely as she said it. For a fraction of a second, something passed across Rebecca’s face, too quick to name. Then it was gone.

“Mr. Newton went himself?” she said, relief flooding her tone “That’s good. That’s really good. Agnes, it’s obvious he cares about you.

You two are meant to be together. You have to make it work.”

Agnes suiled but didin’t answer. She shifted the conversation instead. “You moved? I went to your apartment after I got back. The place was empty.”

Rebecca stiffened, the reaction small but noticeable. Her hands fidgeted in her lap.

“I did move. I… Agnes, can you promise not to be angry with me?”

Agnes tilted her head. “Why would I be?”

Rebecca hesitated, then spoke slowly, as though choosing each word with care. “After I lost contact with you, I wasn’t myself. I couldn’t sleep. I kept thinking something had happened you.

‘And with the pregnancy… My body hasn’t been handling stress well.”

‘You know I don’t have anyone else. No family. No one I can rely on, I was scared that one day I might collapse and no one would even know.

So I… I went to the Nolans. The baby is theirs. They have a responsibility.”

she dropped her gaze to her hands, twisting the hem of her shirt between her fingers.

She was braced for anger. Agnes had always been so adamant about Ethan, about keeping distance between Rebecca and that family. She had promised, more than once, that she was done with him.

Now that Agnes knew she had actually gone to the Nolans on her own, Rebecca was sure she would lose it.

But the anger didn’t come.

I understand,” Agnes said quietly. “You made the right choice. When you’re alone and carrying a child. you do what you have to do. Protecting yourself and your baby comes first. I’m not angry.”

Relief flooded across Rebecca’s face, almost too quickly. “Really? I was so worried you’d be upset. But I can Issure you that the Nolans have been very good to me.

When they found out the baby is Ethan’s, they were thrilled. They’ve been taking such good care of me

I’m staying at their estate now. They’ve accepted my child. They treat me like… like I’m already part of the amily.”

Her voice lifted as she spoke, her excitement spilling out unchecked. She looked almost giddy

Agnes felt an unease she couldn’t quite name, but if this was Rebecca’s choice, it the Nolans had truly opened their doors to her, then she had no standing to object

A family like that could give Rebecca and her child security, comfort, and a future. That was what mattered.

“That’s good,” Agnes said. “If they’re taking care of you, I can stop worrying.

“But remember, you always have a place here. This will always be your home. Whatever happens, I’ll be here for you.”

Rebecca’s eyes filled again. She threw her arms around Agnes. “Thank you. Thank you so much
