Neal froze in place, his eyes turning red at the corners. "Agnes... you..."
Agnes quickly put on a sweet smile again and said, "Neal, you don't need to blame yourself. Everything was my own choice.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you this earlier. I didn't want you to worry about it."
Agnes paused, her tone firm.
"I just want to tell you this, no matter what happens, you'll always be my friend.
"You are you, and the Ruells are the Ruells. I'm grateful for everything you've done for me.
"If you ever need me in the future, I'll always help you without hesitation.
"I came here today for no other reason than to celebrate your birthday."
As she spoke, Agnes took a black record from her bag and handed it to Neal.
She said, "This is my gift for you. There's a classic song on this record, 'The Sound of Silence.' It's my favorite song."
She added, "Sometimes, silence says the most.
"Neal, I hope that no matter where you are in the future, you can always follow the quiet place deep in your heart.
"Happy birthday!"
Neal stood there, his body shaking slightly. His eyes were already red and filled with tears.
He lowered his head and took the record from Agnes's hands. He whispered, "Thank you... I'm sorry, Agnes..."
Agnes gently patted his arm and said casually, "It's nothing. We're friends, right? Well, I should go now.
"No matter what you choose in the future, I'll support you. Good luck, Neal."
Seeing Agnes finally ready to leave, Kenneth sneered behind her, "Ms. Sinclair, not staying for Neal's engagement party?"
Agnes stopped, turned back, and said lightly with a teasing tone, "No thanks, Mr. Kenneth. I don't like it here. It feels dirty."
Kenneth's face twisted in anger, veins popping on his forehead as he said coldly, "Then get out. Don't expect me to see you off!"
Neal ran after her. "Agnes, let me take you to the hospital!"
"Stop him! Bring Neal back!"
At Kenneth's order, a group of men in black suits walked in from every direction around the Ruell Villa.
Agnes held back the pain in her back and forced a smile. She tried to sound relaxed as she said to Neal, "You should go back. You've got things to deal with.
"Remember what I said—don't act on impulse. Follow your heart.
"Look at me. I know it's dangerous, but I still walked right into it. I'm so calm, right? Hehe..."
Neal could easily see that she was just pretending to be relaxed. He knew that feeling of being struck with a cane all too well.
He never thought the Ruells could be this cruel.
