Agnes raised an eyebrow. Well, that escalated quickly. Is this a threat?
Her gaze cooled. "Ms. Brogdon, what exactly are you implying? You're overstepping."
Vivian said, "I'm Neal's fiancée. The future Mrs. Ruell.
"I don't want the man I'm going to marry hung up on someone else."
Agnes found Vivian almost laughable.
One moment, she was tearfully apologizing. The next, the mask had slipped entirely.
Agnes smiled.
"Shouldn't you be saying this to Neal? If he truly cared about you, why would his heart be elsewhere?
"And if he doesn't care about you, I could move to outer space, and it wouldn't make a difference."
Vivian's face stiffened. She forced her social smile to hold.
"Ms. Sinclair, you know as well as I do—ours is an arranged marriage between two powerful families.
"Family interests come first. As for feelings... those can be cultivated after the wedding.
"That's how it works in our world."
Agnes felt physically ill. She let out a cold chuckle.
"I don't know anything about how your world works.
"What I do know is that feelings aren't a transaction, and hearts aren't commodities."
Then, she tilted her head, studying Vivian with quiet amusement.
"But if feelings really can be cultivated after marriage, as you say—
"Then why are you here, marking your territory? Deep down... are you insecure?"
Vivian's face flushed crimson. How is this woman so sharp-tongued?
She blurted out, "Do you even know? Neal cut ties with the Ruells because of you!"
Agnes stiffened for a beat. But a part of her was glad—glad that Neal had finally broken free.
"Neal is an adult. He makes his own decisions. He's not a puppet for your families to profit from.
"Whatever he decides, one, it's not my place to interfere. Two, I'll only ever support him."
Vivian was about to explode. This woman was determined to fight her at every turn.
Nothing is working.
Not her place to interfere? Only ever support him? Isn't that just stringing Neal along?
Encouraging him to rebel against the Ruells even harder. This woman is the worst.
Vivian steadied herself. The composure returned.
She smiled at Agnes.
"I can see why Neal likes you. Ms. Sinclair, I admire your frankness.
"Since that's how it is, I won't take up any more of your time.
"One last question. Ms. Sinclair—do you have feelings for Neal?"
