“Isn’t it obvious you’re here to sabotage my evening with Raymond? Too bad for around. He didn’t even invite you. You showed up uninvited and glued yourself to him. How embarrassing.”
Agnes kept her voice light. “Feeling threatened already? Running over here to mark your territory? Did you miss the part where he physically dragged me here?”
Hillary’s nostrils flared. “Tonight is the St. Austen reunion. What business do you have crashing it?
“And you’re accusing me of marking territory? Have you no shame? What exactly are you still doing here, clinging on like a barnacle?”
Agnes smiled. “Oh, Hillary–I’ve been seeing quite a bit of you in the news lately.
“That brand of yours, what was it again? Y–and–something? Didn’t you tell me it got invited to some big fashion competition?
“So how’d that go? First place? Gold medal?”
Hillary’s face went scarlet. “That competition had some… irregularities. They haven’t even announced the results yet.
“Whatever you saw online was fabricated by people trying to smear me!”
Agnes blinked innocently. “I didn’t even say what I saw online. Why so defensive? Don’t tell me someone actually did drag your brand through the mud.”
She burst out laughing. “Sounds like that little venture of yours isn’t doing so hot. Might want to shut it down. Honestly, I can’t breathe.”
Hillary was about to erupt when a cluster of female classmates descended on them in a flurry of squeals.
“Hillary! It’s been forever! You haven’t aged a day! Still gorgeous!”
“Our Hillary–the undisputed queen of St. Austen. Beautiful and brilliant.
“I heard Raymond dropped a billion on her recently just to support her career and make his girl smile.
“Hillary, you are living the dream. I’m so jealous!”
“Well, obviously! Hillary’s been by Raymond’s side since college.

“They were literally the golden couple of our year.
You have no idea how many people shipped them.”
“Absolutely! All these years, and they’re still going strong. Forget a billion–he’d give a hundred billion without blinking!”
“By the way, Hillary, when’s the wedding? You have to invite us! We want to bask in the glow!”
Hillary ducked her head in a demure little smile, lips parting to answer–when a sound interrupted her.
Agnes, standing off to the side, was pressing a hand to her mouth, shoulders shaking with barely contained laughter.
So, this was the story Hillary had been spinning. That the billion Raymond spent keeping her out of prison was some kind of romantic grand gesture.
“Excuse me, who are you? I don’t recognize you. That’s incredibly rude–what’s so funny?” One of the women rounded on Agnes.
Agnes waved her free hand, tears of laughter forming. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry–I’m just so happy for Hillary. This is amazing.”
“What is your problem? Hillary is going to be the future Mrs. Newton. You should count yourself lucky to even be in the same room.
“Which department were you in? I’ve never seen your face.”
Agnes smiled pleasantly. “I didn’t go to St. Austen.”
“You’re not even from our university? Then why are you here?”
One of the women’s eyes narrowed, sliding from Agnes to the far side of the room.
“Wait–I saw you walk in with Raymond. What’s your relationship with him?”
Agnes’s expression didn’t waver. She opened her mouth. “He and I aren’t-
Before she could finish, a man appeared at her side, one arm curling around her waist, his voice unexpectedly soft.
“Let me introduce everyone. This is my wife, Agnes Sinclair.
“Agnes, these are my college classmates.”
