If you don’t pay, you can expect a call from my lawyers.

The women stood fuming with her teeth clenched. Hillary wanted to keep arguing, but then her gaze drifted past Agnes and caught Raymond looking in their direction from across the terrace.

Her hand flew to her chest. Her breath hitched, then broke apart. Her shoulders trembled violently as she crumpled toward the floor.

Hillary? What’s wrong?

Is it your heart again? You’re shaking so much

Gabrielle raised her voice, pitching it toward accusation. Back in college, Hillary shielded Raymond when a falling air conditioner unit came loose. She’s never been the same since. She can’t handle stress.

Ms. Sinclair, this is too far. All this over a dress, and now you’ve made her sick.”

Agnes went still. Did she just say that it was Hillary who shielded him?

She didn’t believe in coincidences that convenient. Two people, hit by a falling air conditioner?

One saved by her, the other saved by Hillary?

Then another memory surfaced. A girl tumbling down the stairs alongside him. Someone who had simply been there.

Agnes let out a quiet, cold laugh. Hillary had been there. She had seen what happened. And she had let Raymond believe it was her.

Hillary, she said, her tone dipped in silk and thorns, funny how every time you see me, your condition acts up.

Gabrielle tightened her grip around Hillary, fury blazing.

You have the nerve to say that? You’re nothing but bad luck. You’re poison to her.

Agnes laughed. Funny you should say that. I saw a fortuneteller once when I was young. She told me I have a very strong constitution. I’m especially good at cutting through girls who play sweet and innocent.

Before anyone could respond, she picked up a glass of water from the table and tossed it directly in D Hillary’s face.

The reaction was instant. Hillary jolted upright, wiping at her eyes, her voice breaking loose before she could stop it. Agnes! Are you insane?!

The shout had barely left her mouth before she remembered herself. She slumped back into Gabrielle’s arms, her breathing going shallow again, her eyes fluttering.

Agnes watched her with open amusement. Hillary, you looked like you were about to pass out. Wouldn’t want you losing consciousness on us. Better to stay awake. No need to thank me.”

Gabrielle’s voice cracked with outrage. You are a monster. An absolute monster.

Which part did I get wrong? Tell me. I’ll say it a hundred more times

You bitch!

Gabrielle’s arm shot up, hand aimed for Agnes’s cheek. Agnes didn’t flinch. She was almost looking forward to it.

A slap like that, on a face like hers, would cost far more than a ruined dress.

The strike never came. A hand caught Gabrielle’s wrist midair, fingers tightening just enough to make her wince.

Neal?! Let go! You’re hurting me!

Neal released her with a sharp shove that sent her stumbling.

Gabrielle, you’ve been out of school for years. Still haven’t grown out of that temper, have you?

She started it! She’s trying to extort us! And she’s been tormenting Hillary! She stole Raymond!Footsteps approached.

Raymond stepped into the circle, his expression dark, controlled. He crouched beside Hillary, lifting her carefully into his arms. Are you alright?

Hillary melted into him, her voice a fragile, trembling thing. RaymondI was just trying to help.

Some of the girls were arguing with Agnes, and I thought I could calm things down. She threw water in my face.

She said she was born to destroy me. My heartIt really doesn’t feel right

Gabrielle seized the moment. Raymond, your wife has gone too far! I admitted it was an accident, but she kept pushing me, and now she’s hurting Hillary. Everyone here saw it!

Hillary added quietly, Agnes had gone too far.

Gabrielle spilled wine on her dress by mistake, apologized, even offered to have it cleaned.

But Agnes won’t let it go. She insisted on full compensation, and she’s asking an insane amount. 100 million.

She watched his face carefully, searching for any crack in the stone. His expression remained as it always was. Cold, unreadable, a fortress with all doors sealed.

He turned to Agnes. Is that true?

Agnes met his gaze without blinking. Yes. That’s exactly what happened. If you damage someone’s property, you compensate them. That’s basic decency. What’s wrong with that?
