Chapter 66 Forgotten Promise

He had been cold and distant, with almost no friends and always kept to himself and stayed quiet.

So no one at school knew he was the eldest son of the well–known Newtons, including Hillary.

I only learned about the Newtons later from the elders in my family. Raymond did not grow up with the Newtons when he was young.

His mother only brought him back to the Newtons after he entered high school.

One could say he finally returned to where he belonged.

After graduation, everyone went their own way. Hillary chose to study overseas, and I heard the two of them broke up.

She saw the young Raymond sitting at the piano, trying his best to play, but he looked unhappy.

His mother stood beside him with a ruler in her hand, hitting him from time to time.

“Wrong! Wrong again! What is going on with you? You’ve practiced for so long, and you still haven’t improved at all! You’re going to practice for a full three hours today!”

After his mother left, the boy slumped over the piano and cried quietly.

“Raymond!” Agnes called out.

The boy was crying so hard that when he heard a voice, he quickly lifted his head. Then he noticed a small chubby hand resting on the windowsill, clutching a piece of candy tightly.

He wiped his tears and walked over, only to see a little girl standing there, still shorter than the sill.

Her round little head had two tiny pigtails sticking up, and her pink chubby face looked like a peach. Her bright eyes were wide open, and she smiled sweetly at him.

“Raymond, this candy is for you. My mommy said when you’re unhappy, if you eat candy, your heart becomes sweet. Then you won’t cry anymore

As she spoke, the girl waved the candy in her hand.

“Who are you?”

“My house is right next to yours. My name is Agnes. What’s yours?”

“Raymond…” The boy hesitated before answering softly.

“Raymond, why are you crying?”

“I don’t want to play the piano. I hate playing the piano!”

“Why do you hate it? Raymond, you’re really good at it! I like it a lot!”

“Then you can ask your mom to let you

“Raymond, can I come listen to you play every day? I really, really like it.”

“Mm.”

Looking at the girl’s sincere expression and her earnest request, Raymond agreed without thinking.

Raymond and his mother had only recently moved there, and he had no friends either.

Every day, the little girl leaned on the windowsill and listened to him play the piano.

Sometimes she brought him candy. Sometimes she picked small wildflowers by the roadside for him.

There was even a time when she gave him two small elay figures she had made herself holding hands together.

She said those two figures represented them, and that they would always be best friends forever.

The figures were not very pretty, but Raymond treasured them deeply and kept them until now.

She seemed to become his reason for learning piano. Every time Raymond saw Agnes appear, that natural urge boys had to impress girls rose inside him, and he played the piano with full passion.

Whenever he saw her watching him with admiration and with her eyes shining brightly, his small world lit up, and he finally smiled again.

From then on, they played together, went to school together, watched the stars together, diaries together.
