Sienna could barely hold herself together. With a shaky gasp, she dropped right down onto the hardwood floor.
Emma’s cheeks flushed scarlet. “I—I only heard about it from the housekeeper! She told me, that’s all!”
Whitney rolled her eyes and called her out. “Oh really? The housekeeper knew something before you did? Funny how that works. Maybe the housekeeper also happened to drag Sienna all the way to the Nelsons’ front door, huh?”
Mrs. Nelson’s eyes went wide. She slammed her palm on the table with a crack.
She never imagined that the old lady she’d known for years would try to trick her like this. She’d worried about Sienna, treated her almost like her own niece, but these two—grandmother and granddaughter—had cooked up this scheme right under her nose.
If she hadn’t caught it in time, the Nelson family’s name would’ve been dragged through the mud. The whole upper crust of Brew Hill would be whispering about how Shane was covering up a scandal.
A single misstep—sometimes, that’s all it takes to ruin someone’s life.
“So this was your plan all along? You and your darling granddaughter—thick as thieves—decided to play your dirty little games with my family? Well, that’s enough. Honey, take care of this.”
Mrs. Nelson was shaking with anger as she whipped her napkin aside and turned away.
Emma glared daggers at Whitney, but she knew she’d lost. She burst out crying, wailing, “You’re all ganging up on an old woman! Sienna was at your house for dinner last night, and then this disaster happens—I showed up early to check on her, that’s all! And now I’m being accused of plotting? Where’s the justice? Somebody help me, please!”
Gary was appalled by her nerve. “There’s more than enough proof! Your granddaughter was demanding an engagement with Shane, yet she’s sneaking around with another man? You wanted the prestige and the money—well, too bad. The engagement was never official, and now, it’s never going to be. Give it up.
Honestly, your family’s made enough of a scene.
Since your granddaughter was messing around last night and Shane had nothing to do with it, what are you still doing here? You’re nothing but bad luck. Butler, show them out!
