Whitney was absolutely speechless, cheeks flushing with embarrassment for a moment. “Who needs your help against him, anyway? Ludwik, I can mess with all I want—but you? No way. Don’t even think about getting your hands on a single cent from the Lippert Group.”
Now it was Shane’s turn to rub his forehead. They weren’t even back together yet, and she was already guarding the guy’s assets like a hawk.
Women—never say what they mean.
He let out a cold snort. “Sandy’s working tomorrow, so let her take the afternoon off. Trust me, Tina’s gonna be so upset she’ll probably get a fever. She has to see her daughter.”
Whitney just tsked under her breath.
“Hey, Whit, who are you texting with that look on your face?” Sandy turned from the passenger seat, still weighed down by worry. She caught Whitney furiously tapping her phone, her expression a little wild.
Whitney quickly angled the screen away. “Oh, no one. Just texting Felix about something with Sienna…”
Suddenly, the whole car went silent.
Felix, driving up front, nearly stomped on the brakes.
Whitney frowned, glancing up as Sandy shot her a strange look, then pointed ahead. “Uh, but Felix is right there. Driving the car?”
“….”
Felix coughed hard, no longer able to play dead. He barely managed a smile, holding up his phone. “Heh, Ms. Valentine, I got your message! You must be swamped—forgot I was the one driving.”
“Ah… right, right. My brain’s fried from all the work.” Whitney’s face was pure thunderstruck, quickly tucking her phone away. She grabbed Sandy’s arm, looking up at her little sister with the guilty face of someone who just sold out her own flesh and blood.
Poor Sandy, clueless as ever, just looked at her with trusting eyes. She bit her lip and added, “You should rest, Whit. You stayed up all night digging into Sienna’s mess—all for me, just to clear my name…”
“Hey, sis. I thought about it, and I have to say it: I’m sorry.”
Whitney gave her a gentle nudge, smiling softly. “Sandy, what are you apologizing for? No need for that between us.”
