Owen was left speechless. So childish.
Roseanne frowned. That couldn't be right. She had carefully selected each one, and they all looked incredibly sweet. He probably just had bad luck and picked a sour one.
Owen and Corley picked two large baskets full, and in the end, gave them all to Roseanne. After packing the strawberries into bags, the three of them started walking back. They found Carlson and the old woman squatting by a patch of earth nearby, talking about something.
As they got closer, they saw Carlson holding a small hoe, tilling the soil as he spoke.
“...Although strawberries aren’t too picky about soil, they do best in fertile, loose, well-draining sandy loam with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. This soil is okay, but its drainage is a bit worse than sandy loam…”
“No wonder so many of the roots rotted early on,” the old woman said, suddenly understanding. “When I bought it, the seller swore up and down it was sandy loam. To think he’d lie to an old woman like me!”
“Carlson, have you grown strawberries before? You seem to know so much.”
Carlson replied, “My family never did, but I saw our neighbors growing them once. They had a book about it, so I borrowed it and read it.”
“Oh, I see… You handle that hoe so skillfully. Do you usually have to help with chores at home?”
“Yes. My mom’s health isn’t good, and my dad can’t manage everything alone, so I always have to help with planting in the spring and harvesting in the fall.”
“What a good boy…”
The old woman had a sharp eye. From the moment Carlson had walked in, she had guessed that his family probably wasn’t well-off. Now, hearing his words and seeing the thick calluses on his fingers, she couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
Just then, a maid came over with a message, saying someone had come to visit.
The old woman was surprised. “Who is it?”
“It seems to be Lanny Saul from the Saul family.”
The Sauls?
Geneva frowned. The two families were on good terms. The entire Saul family had attended her husband’s birthday banquet. Their son, Lanny Saul, had even been introduced to the old couple by his father. Why would he suddenly visit?
“Is he alone?”
