"Okay!" The old man nodded, seeming to have made up his mind. After a moment of consideration, he added, "Be gentle with her. She’s a delicate girl, so be kind and avoid hurting her."
"Well, you seem quite concerned all of a sudden." The old woman glared at the old man in annoyance, her tone sarcastic.
"What are you talking about?" The old man frowned in displeasure, his face wrinkling up even more. "She’s soon to be our daughter-in-law. Stop your nagging. Do you want a daughter-in-law? Do you want to see your grandchildren or not?"
The old woman shot the old man a look, "Alright, you go find our son. I’m going to find some clothes for the girl."
The old man nodded and left, but not before reminding repeatedly that they should not be harsh to Gu Qibao, and should prevent her from running away.
The old woman, having agreed, went to find clean clothes.
Following behind the boy, Gu Qibao cautiously asked, "Is that old woman your mother? Also, where is this place? I’m from Niujia Village, could you return me there later on? I assure you, since you saved my life, I’ll give you a lot of money. Then, you won’t have to stay in this broken-down place."
The boy didn’t respond, but the old woman, who had just stepped back into the room, heard her and looked pleased. She glanced at the coarse cloth clothes in her hands before turning around to look for better ones.
With the boy’s continuing silence, Gu Qibao frowned anxiously. Could this boy really be mute?
She hastened to catch the boy’s attention, "Can you understand me?" she asked.
The boy gave a slight nod, still silent. He then reached under the pillow on the bed and took out something.
Gu Qibao saw that it was a lighter. Unclear about the boy’s intentions, she followed him when he made a gesture for her to do so.
With no other choice, Gu Qibao followed him and asked again, "Ergouzi, are you unable to speak?"
The boy remained silent before finally nodding.
