Without thinking, I jumped in her path to grab the blade in her hand.
Just as I was about to, the woman was suddenly kicked away. The force was terrifying, and it had happened so fast too. In the blink of an eye, she was already flying backward.
Then, my hands were yanked to the side hard.
William’s handsome face was frighteningly stormy as lie scanned my hands for any injuries. His furious expression only eased slightly upon confirming I hadn’t been hurt.
Then, he berated me like I was an idiot while still holding my hand. “Are you out of your mind? You just tried to grab a knife with your bare hands! What if your hands had gotten permanently damaged? What then?”
I blinked blankly at him. Given that his life had been on the line, I didn’t have time to think. And what were my hands compared to his life? So, of course, I would prioritize protecting his life over preserving them.
Still…
“Why are you so upset with me? I was just trying to save your life,” I shot back.
William scoffed. “Save my life? You think I need you to be my human shield?”
He had already sensed danger the second that woman had approached. But he didn’t expect I would recklessly put myself in harm’s way.
Pouting, I sullenly said, “Well, either way, I had good intentions, didn’t I?”
William still wanted to scold me more for my foolish actions, but when he saw the hint of hurt in my eyes, he shut his mouth. He also couldn’t name what he was feeling at that moment.
Sure, plenty of people had risked their lives for him before, but they had always done so with ulterior motives or with some benefit to gain.
So, William felt I was utterly stupid for doing so. However, it also made him recall how he felt when he had been saved from drowning.
Just then, his driver and bodyguards rushed over.
The woman had been trying to get back up but was swiftly kicked back down again. The kick sent her wig flying, which was when we realized she was actually a man in disguise. No wonder she was so unusually tall.
Still sprawled on the pavement, the cross–dressing man glared at William.
“You killed my loved ones, William Ashford! You’ll pay for it! You won’t die easy!” the man yelled.
William chuckled coldly. “I don’t know if that’s how I’ll die, but I know that’s guaranteed for you.”
With that, he signaled his bodyguards with one look, and they immediately moved forward to drag the man away.
But then, the child in the stroller let out a sharp, wailing cry. I had never seen someone bring a real child along for an assassination attempt. So, I didn’t know what to think at that moment.
“Look, everyone! Look at the evil monster who stole my family’s company and destroyed my family! And now, he’s trying to get rid of me and my toddler!” the man shouted.
He raged to bystanders, painting a picture of how William had set up his family’s company and then pulled funding at the worst moment. Because of this, the man’s family went bankrupt, and his wife and parents were pushed to their deaths.
Then, he claimed he had tried to kill William because he was at the end of his rope.
Those who heard his tale couldn’t help feeling sorry for him, especially when his child was crying pitifully.

They felt it was wrong of the man to attempt homicide, but they alto belleved he wouldn’t have done something so dangerous if he had had any other choice.
The bystanders then looked at William as though he were an overly cruel capitalist.
In this world, there would always be those who made snap judgments without knowing the full story. As such, they would even excuse criminals‘ behavior just because they seemed pitiful, not just for situations like William’s.
There were cases where people went to extremes to get revenge of society and caused serious harm in the process.
However, others would always make excuses for these people’s behavior. They would say these criminals had to have suffered a great injustice to do such a thing or that society had forced them to this point.
But was this always the case? No.
Those who committed crimes, took revenge on society, or harmed innocents were evil at heart, regardless of their reason for doing so. There was no excuse for harming innocents. So, in this world, not every weak or pitiful person deserved sympathy William seemed used to such judgment, as he merely waved to signal his bodyguards to take the man away. Then, without even sparing a glance at the wailing toddler, he opened the car door and pulled me into the car with him.
