Elspeth stood nearby, watching Elowen beam at the treasures inside the chest, eyes sparkling
hke a kid on festival morning. A deep sense of satisfaction filled her.
Unlike the two she had raised. No matter what she gifted them, they barely reacted.
A daughter was simply sweeter than sons.
After Elspeth sat down, she asked, “By the way, you’ve got riding clothes, right?”
Elowen’s expression dimmed for a split second. … used to. I don’t anymore.”
She looked up. “Why do you ask, Aunt?”
The Autumn Hunt is at the end of the month. You can’t show up without proper riding clothes.”
As she spoke, Elspeth rose to her feet. “Come on. We’re heading out. I’ll get you a few sets.”
Elowen blinked. The Autumn Hunt?
Seated in the carriage as it rolled through the streets, Elowen’s thoughts drifted back to her previous life.
During the Autumn Hunt that year, Elspeth had also been in Vanelle.
Though Elowen had not interacted with her directly, she had heard what happened. Elspeth’s horse had suddenly bolted out of control. She was thrown hard to the ground, her face slashed by sharp stones.
At the time, everyone said the horse was wild.
But afterward, Elowen had seen that very horse. It had been gentle. She had concluded then that Elspeth had been set up.
In her previous life, however, Elowen had been barely surviving herself. She had no room to worry about anyone else.
At that Autumn Hunt, she had been utterly defeated too.
“Here we are.”
The carriage came to a stop. Elspeth took Elowen’s hand and led her down.
Elowen recognized the place immediately. Silken Veil Atelier.

In Vanelle, the finest dressmakers and cosmetic Bouses gathered along this lane. It was the most expensive stretch in the city, Ordinary families could not even dream of shopping here.
Even when Hale family still stood, funds had been tight. Elowen had come here at most once
a year.
After she married Alaric in her previous life, she had never stepped foot here again.
Though she had heard that Alaric had brought Daphne here more than once.
“Take a look. See what you like.”
Elspeth led Elowen inside.
Layered skirts, embroidered gowns, riding jackets, tailored bodices, racks upon racks filled the shop in a dazzling display.
A clerk hurried forward, smiling wide. “How can I help you today?”
Elspeth asked, “Do you carry riding clothes?”
“Of course.”
He led them deeper inside. On a long rack stood a full row of fitted riding outfits in various
colors.
This one’s nice.”
Elspeth stopped in front of a deep crimson set. Elowen studied it, then looked at her. “Aunt, that one would look incredible on you.”
“Really?”
“Really, Why don’t you try it on?”
Elspeth was tempted already. There was no way she would not try it.
Before heading into the fitting room, she reminded Elowen, “You pick carefully too. I’m really here to shop for you.”
Elowen smiled. “I know. I’ll choose properly.”
After Elspeth left, Elowen continued looking over the riding outfits. More customers entered the outer room. A group of young ladies, chattering excitedly.
“I heard for this year’s Autumn Hunt, a lot of arrangements were handed over to Galen.”

Flowen’s gaze darkened slightly. In her previous life, that Autumn Hunt had also been organized by Galen.
In Avenlor, the hunt included a competition. Whoever brought down the most game would win the grand prize.
Each year the prize differed. That year, Galen had prepared something special.
At least, to Elowen, it had been.
But in her previous life, even though she endured searing pain in her legs and nearly pushed herself to collapse, she had still lost to Daphne.
“Don’t say it like that.”
Daphne’s voice floated in from outside. “It’s not that the palace favors our family. The Autumn Hunt is a tough job. My father just happened to draw the short straw.”
Elowen’s brow shifted faintly.
The girls showered Daphne with compliments, calling her modest. Their voices drew closer.
Elowen turned. Several girls, fresh and delicate as spring buds, surrounded Daphne as they entered the inner room.
They were mid-conversation when they spotted Elowen.
The chatter cut off instantly. Silence fell.
Daphne recovered first. She smiled lightly. “Your Grace. Fancy seeing you here.”
Elowen’s face remained calm. She said nothing.
Daphne gestured to the others. “Well? Show some respect.”
The girls startled awake and offered awkward greetings.
Daphne asked, “Are you here for riding clothes to?”
Elowen glanced at her. “Yes.”
Daphne tilted her head. “Really? I thought since you’re from Hale family, you’d own more riding outfits than anyone.”

She paused, as if remembering something. “Oh right. I forgot. When Hale family fell in hantle and you were the only one left. I heard you were so heartbroken that you burned all your riding clothes in a fit of grief.”
