Sure enough, once Alaric spiraled, there was no stopping him. She and Kaelan together were nowhere near enough to restrain him.

Her chest burned with urgency. Her mind spun fast, searching for a countermeasure.

“Your Highness!” Kaelan said, his brows drawn tight. “That horse isn’t wild. It only answers to Her Grace, the Duchess of Duskmoor. If it remains by Her Grace’s side, nothing will happen!”

Alaric acted as though he had not heard a single word.

“Even if…” Kaelan clenched his teeth, “even if Your Highness insists on putting the horse down, why must it be done in front of Her Grace? It can be handled inside the stables!”

Aware he stood at a disadvantage, Kaelan forced his tone to soften, almost negotiating. “Her Grace is injured. A physician should be summoned to tend the wound. Otherwise, it will leave a scar. And if His Grace returns and sees the injury, and learns what happened today at the hunting grounds…”

Alaric cut him off mercilessly. “What, you think he can pull me down from the Crown Prince’s Wing?”

Kaelan froze.

Alaric let out a short, mocking laugh. “He won’t. And he doesn’t dare.”

Out of respect for Theodric, he addressed Cassian as uncle.

Over the years, relying on Theodric’s favor, Cassian had not hesitated to discipline him. When he was young, Cassian had never gone easy on him.

Especially after marrying Elowen, Cassian had repeatedly put him in his place.

But he was the Crown Prince. How long was he supposed to endure it?

“Your Highness, please-”

Kaelan tried again.

Alaric’s patience ran out. “Guards. Gag him.”

The servants hesitated. Kaelan’s mother was a princess. His grandfather was a prince of the realm. To silence him so roughly…

One servant ventured cautiously, “Your Highnes, perhaps this is not appropriate-”

A sharp crack echoed.

Alaric struck him across the face. The servant went rigid.

Alaric pointed to another. “You.”

With that warning clear enough, the second servant did not dare object. He stepped forward, shot Kaelan an apologetic look, and forcefully stuffed a cloth into his mouth.

Kaelan could only struggle, producing muffled protests. “Your Highness! Your Highness!”

The servant sent to lead Ember came running back in disarray, clothes streaked with dirt and straw. “That horse won’t be controlled. Anyone who gets near it gets kicked!”

Elowen lifted her eyes slowly.

Alaric frowned, glanced at the dust and mud on the servant, then turned back.

Suddenly, one corner of his mouth lifted. “Did you say that horse could read people?”

Elowen froze.

When they were young, she had said that. The first time Alaric met Ember, he had liked the horse but had been too nervous to approach, afraid of being thrown.

She had told him Ember was clever, that it understood words, that if she told Ember he was her friend, it would behave.

She had not expected him to remember. Now he smiled faintly and prepared to issue another order.

“Back then…

Elowen’s voice came out hoarse.

Alaric paused and glanced at her. “Yes?”

Her voice trembled visibly. “You rode Ember. You fed it carrots. It liked you.”

“Liked me?”

Mockery flickered in his eyes. “No. It liked me once.”

He emphasized the last words, staring at her. “Isn’t that right, Aunt?”
