Elowen finished chewing the candied plum in her mouth, swallowed, and smiled lightly. “Let them in.”

Before long, the Nordian siblings were shown inside.

Today Zachary and Flowira were dressed like ordinary townsfolk from Vanelle. Both wore men’s riding clothes, and their hair had been carefully arranged to hide the distinctive curls and green eyes that marked their foreign heritage.

“Your Grace.”

Zachary and Flowira stepped into the study and offered their greetings.

Elowen was focused on drinking her tonic. Hearing them, she simply lifted her eyes and gave them a warm smile.

Cassian, however, caught something immediately and raised a brow.

Whether by design or coincidence, when the two from Nordia offered their greeting, they addressed the Duchess of Duskmoor first, and only afterward acknowledged the Duke of Duskmoor.

By common custom, when paying respects to a ducal couple, the duke’s title always came first.

But Zachary and Flowira had reversed the order.

That subtle change was unlikely to be accidental.

Cassian said nothing about it. He simply gestured toward the seats. “Have a seat.”

Yet the siblings remained standing.

Only when Elowen lifted her head from the bowl and said gently, “Please, sit. It’s all right,” did they respond.

The two answered in unison before walking to the chairs below and taking their seats.

The odd feeling in his chest deepened.

With growing curiosity, he found himself seriously wondering whether, in their eyes, or perhaps in Nordia itself, Elowen held some unusually significant status.

Is it because of her mysterious grandfather?

“Why have you come in the middle of the day?” Elowen asked.

The incident at the Christmas Eve banquet had been a joint scheme between them.

If word spread that the Nordian envoys had visited Duskmoor Manor, it could easily invite suspicion.

Zachary inclined his head slightly and answered calmly.

“Your Grace, under ordinary circumstances, visiting at night would indeed be safer and more discreet. However, by the time I considered it last night, it was already quite late. I thought that after attending the palace banquet while carrying a child, Your Grace must have retired early.”

He paused before continuing.

“After thinking it through, moving about at night might actually draw more attention. Coming openly during the day, as we have done now, is far less suspicious.”

Elowen considered this and nodded.

Her gaze drifted to Flowira. A curious smile appeared in her eyes.

“This is the first time I’ve seen Princess Flowira dressed in men’s clothes,” she said. “It suits you surprisingly well. You look quite spirited. Honestly, you carry yourself like you were born to it.”

Zachary turned his head and quietly translated her words into the Nordian tongue.

Flowira blinked her striking green eyes. The corner of her lips lifted as she replied in a rapid stream of Nordian, her gaze flicking toward Elowen with a hint of playful meaning.

Zachary turned back with perfect composure.

“My sister says,” he translated evenly, “thank you for the compliment, Your Grace.”

Beside them, Cassian let out a soft scoff.

“When we last came to speak with Your Grace, we expressed our loyalty. At the time, Your Grace said you needed to see whether our sincerity was genuine.”

He continued calmly.

“After what happened at the palace banquet last night, we wondered how much Your Grace

trusts us now.”

Elowen nodded faintly. Zachary’s voice grew solemn.
