Chapter 743 Why Don’t You Fix Lunch Yourself?
She lifted a corner of the blue cloth to reveal a heap of dew-kissed plants. They were indeed herbs-sage, echinacea, mint, and a few others Elowen couldn’t identify.
Elowen nodded, letting the matter drop
Covering the basket again, Betty pulled a bowl from her coat and set it on the low table by Elowen’s bedside. Inside was steaming cornmeal porridge.
‘Eat while it’s hot. I’m off,” Betty said, before turning to leave in a hurry, Ethan on her back and the basket
n hand.
Elowen picked up the bowl of cornmeal porridge and stirred it with a spoon, the rising steam blurring her ‘eatures. She didn’t eat right away, choosing to wait instead.
Sure enough, a small head soon peeked through the doorway. Emma clung to the frame, her bright eyes ›linking as she watched Elowen with a mix of curiosity and shyness.
With a smile, Elowen waved her over. “Come in, Emma.”
Emma hesitated for a moment before finally gathering her courage and shuffling into the room, one small
tep at a time.
Elowen held out the bowl of cornmeal porridge. “Here, this is for you.”
Emma’s eyes widened. She swallowed hard, glancing up at Elowen before looking back down. “Mama said
shouldn’t take things from guests…” she whispered.
I can’t finish it,” Elowen said warmly. “It’ll go to waste if it gets cold.”
Emma finally accepted the bowl, cradling it in both hands as a look of pure bliss washed over her face with
very bite.
Elowen waited patiently until the girl finished before asking, Emma, did someone come back late last night?”
Guileless as any child, Emma immediately saw Elowen as a friend now that they had shared food. Licking her lips, she nodded without a second thought, “That was Thomas, my brother-in-law. He went up into the mountains to gather herbs and didn’t get back until morning.”
‘Your brother-in-law?” Elowen asked.
“Uh-huh,” Emma said earnestly. “Thomas is really nice to me, and to Mama and Ethan, too. He can ride, horses, he knows how to hunt, and he even makes me little lanterns to catch trethes
“Do you have an older sister, Emma?” Elowen asked.
Emma nodded vigorously. “Yes! My sister’s name is Samantha. She’s so pretty.”
Something stirred in Elowen’s mind. “Where is Samantha? Why is Thomas living here by himself?”

Emma’s smile faded a little. She looked down, her voice dropping. “Samantha went away to make money. Thomas stayed behind to help out around the house and earn money too.”
Elowen nodded, starting to piece it together. Samantha had gone away for work, leaving Thomas with the Whitmans to help with the chores while he waited for his wife’s return.
After a moment’s thought, she asked, “How long has Samantha beer gone?”
Emma pondered this for a long while, counting on her fingers, before finally shaking her head with a sullen sigh. “I can’t remember. A really, really long time.”
Elowen reached out and gently stroked Emma’s hair, letting the questions rest.
Around noon, Robert’s shouting suddenly erupted in the courtyard.
His voice was loud and coarse, rattling the windows. “A bunch of slackers, the lot of you! It’s the middle of he day, and there isn’t even a warm meal on the table! I’m starving to death!”
Elowen’s brow furrowed slightly at the sound.
Emma flinched violently, her face turning pale. Like a startled rabbit, she instinctively shrank closer to Clowen.
Elowen reached out, pulling the girl against her side and gently patting her back. “Don’t be afraid,” she nurmured.
Emma!” Robert bellowed from the courtyard. “You worthless girl! Where the hell are you? Get out of
ere!”
Imma shook even harder. “I—I have to go out there. Otherwise, my dad will beat me…”
Elowen held her firmly by the shoulder, keeping her in place.
Robert’s heavy footsteps approached the room, stopping just outside the door. He didn’t come in. Showing
rare bit of restraint for Elowen’s sake, he demanded, “Where’s your mother?”
Huddled close to Elowen, Emma managed a weak reply. “M-Mama went to town…”
Without a second thought, Robert snapped, “Then get out here and cook!”
