Thomas stared straight at her.”Take me with you.”

Elowen raised an eyebrow. “Why?”

Thomas narrowed his eyes, a fiercely stubborn conviction in his voice. “I don’t believe Samantha is dead.” Gritting his teeth, he muttered under his breath, “And even if she is… I’m bringing her home.”

Elowen didn’t give him an answer. Instead, she looked down and spoke softly to Emma. “Your mother isn’t feeling well right now. Go inside and keep her company.”

Emma nodded obediently and hurried into the house.

Once Emma was back inside, Elowen finally turned to Thomas. “And how exactly do you plan on going?”

“As your attendant. If you’re going to be Prince Zachary’s concubine, you’ll need someone to serve you. Let me go to Kingsport as your servant. I have to find out what happened to Samantha.”

Elowen tapped her chin thoughtfully. “I suppose that could work.”

A flicker of hope flared in Thomas’s eyes.

“However,” Elowen’s tone shifted, “you must obey me blindly. If I say go east, you don’t dare go west. Even if I order you to die, you don’t hesitate.”

Thomas stiffened, his teeth grinding. “You…”

Elowen let out a deliberate sigh. “If it’s too much to ask, then forget it. It’s not like I really wanted a servant anyway.”

Thomas narrowed his eyes, his fists clenching tight.

Elowen didn’t waste any more time on him. She turned leisurely, preparing to head back into the house.

This wasn’t a negotiation; Thomas was the one begging her for a favor

She had barely taken two steps when Thomas finally broke the silence, his voice tight. Wait… hold on!” Elowen stopped and looked back over her shoulder. “Made up your mind?”

Thomas kept his fists clenched. “Yes…”

Elowen raised an eyebrow. “You’ll do whatever I say?”

Thomas gave a muffled grunt of assent.

Elowen wasn’t satisfied. “I want to hear you say the words.”

Thomas ground his teeth, swallowing his pride at last. “I will do… whatever you say.”

Elowen smiled with satisfaction. This was an unexpected bonus. A man of Thomas’s temperament would

be incredibly useful while he was indebted to her. He would do everything in his power to protect her, making him a perfect weapofi

Elowen’s eyes crinkled. Don’t worry, I won’t actually make you die. If you die, I lose a loyal servant, don’t I? As long as I’m alive, you’ll be alive too.”

Having given him the stick, Elowen didn’ mind offering a carrot. She softened her voice, adding, “I’ll make you a promise, Thomas. As long as you play your part, I will help you find Samantha. Didn’t you say it yourself? I’m a capable woman. With my help, you’ll definitely be able to bring Samantha home.”

Her words struck a chord. The hard line of Thomas’s jaw visibly relaxed, and a low “Yeah” escaped his

throat.

Worried she might still be displeased, he added, “I’ll do as you say.”

Elowen found his compliance quite gratifying. She walked over and climbed onto the carriage, gesturing calmly. “Now, drive me to town. I have to see Dr. Wren.”

Thomas frowned.

“If you have something to say, say it,” Elowen said.

His brow furrowed deeper. “If you’re going to town, you need to cover your face.”

Elowen raised an eyebrow.

Thomas glanced at her face-strikingly beautiful and completely out of place in the morning light- before looking away. “People this stunning don’t just appear in impoverished places like this,” he said stiffly. “Anyone can see you’re not from around here. These backwoods are full of desperate people. When poverty drives them to a corner, there’s no telling who might try to take advantage of you.” He paused, then added, “I’m not trying to scare you.”

Thomas expected her to either snap back with a sharp retort or dismiss him with utter disdain. Instead, she did neither.

She actually smiled and nodded. “Alright. Thank you.”

Then, she genuinely pulled her collar up to cover the lower half of her face.

Thomas blinked in surprise.

“Is this okay?” she asked.
