These backwoods are full of desperate people. When poverty drives them to a corner, there’s no telling who might try to take advantage of you.” He paused, then added, “I’m not trying to scare you.”

Thomas expected her to either snap back with a sharp retort or dismiss him with utter disdain. Instead, she did neither.
