“What about us?” I asked, raising a brow.

She groaned loudly, throwing an arm over her eyes.

I smiled at her.

She beamed. Then I hesitated slightly before adding-

“However… I won’t be home until late that night.

There was a beat of silence before her eyes widened again.

Then, she started squealing even louder.

“Oh my gosh!” she shrieked, grabbing my arm. “Pack condoms, alright? I want to be an aunt soon, but you need to be married first, okay? Actually-” she paused, her expression turning mischievous, “if it’s Tristan, it’s alright! I bet he’ll be a really good dad.

“Kath.” I said, dragging out her name in warning.

She did not stop.

“I mean it! He’s rich, he’s handsome, he’s clearly head–over–heels for you—”

“It’s not like that,” I cut in, though my voice softened slightly at the end.

She paused. “Then what is it like?”

“I know I like him,” I trailed off. “However, I want to take it slow this time. I just want to make it official on my birthday.”

Her expression softened instantly. Slowly, a smile spread across her face.

“Aww,” she said, clutching her chest. “You’re in love.”

“I didn’t say that,” I muttered quickly.

“You didn’t have to,” she shot back.

I rolled my eyes, but I could not stop the warmth that crept up my neck.

Kath leaned back again, resting her head on my lap like before, though this time she looked far too pleased with herself.

“This is literally my fantasy,” she continued dreamily. “Best friend falls for the hot, rich guy who is secretly obsessed with her–”

I frowned slightly.

“Is he famous?” I asked.

Kath shrugged. “He’s famous for being Kate Petrov’s brother,” she said. “He styled her back in the day.”

“Kate Petrov,” I repeated quietly.

Kath continued, oblivious to my growing unease.

“He came out with his own clothing and bag brand,” she added. “But it didn’t really click, so he had to close it.”

I listened carefully.

“There was some controversy around it,” she went on. “But it got overshadowed by his sister’s modelling debut.”
