Loving The Better Brother

Chapter 89 Run Away

WILLOW

When it started raining cats and dogs, I knew it was time to leave.

The rain had already soaked through my clothes completely.

I finally accepted the truth I had been avoiding for hours.

He was not coming.

My fingers trembled against the edge of the bench as I slowly stood up. My legs felt stiff, like they had forgotten how to move after sitting there for so long.

I swallowed.

The rain fell even harder, no longer hesitant. It poured relentlessly, drenching everything in sightincluding me.

I stepped forward, away from the place where I had waited for four hours like an idiot.

Happy birthday,I whispered bitterly to myself.

Even the words tasted wrong. I let out a shaky breath, but it did not help.

In fact, nothing helped.

The cold bit into my skin as I walked, my soaked clothes clinging uncomfortably to my body. My hair stuck to my face and neck, and I brushed it away absently, though it made no difference.

I stepped onto the sidewalk, lifting my hand weakly to hail a cab.

One passed by, but it did not stop.

Another one followed.

I stepped closer to the road, my heart lifting slightly.

Taxi!I called out.

The driver glanced at me and then drove past.

My hand slowly lowered.

I stared after it for a moment, disbelief settling in.

Are you serious?I muttered. It was definitely empty!

Rain dripped from my lashes, blurring my vision. I wiped my face, though I couldn’t tell if I was wiping away rain or tears.

Another cab approached. I knew it would be difficult to accept a wet passenger, but I was willing to pay for the cleaning fees and the damages incurred.

I waved both hands this time.

Please,” I whispered.

The cab slowed.

My heart leapt, but then it kept going. The faint sound of the tires against wet pavement faded into the distance.

I glanced down at my phone, my fingers trembling slightly as I tried to press the screen.

It was hard to press, and it seemed water had seeped into it.

The display glitched for a moment before dimming completely.

No,” I whispered.

I pressed the button again.

This can’t be happening.

However, it definitely was happening. My phone was dead and completely useless.

I let my hand fall limply to my side.

I did not have an umbrella. I did not have a jacket. I did not even have a way to call anyone.

And my house was really far from the business district.

I laughed again, softer this time.

I don’t even know how to drive,I muttered under my breath.

I stepped forward again and kept walking. What else was I supposed to do?

The rain grew heavier, soaking me completely. My dress clung to my body, my shoes squishing with every step.

The wind bit against my skin, making me shiver uncontrollably.

I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to preserve whatever warmth I had left.

Another car approached. I stepped forward again, raising my hand.

Please,I said, my voice barely audible.

The car slowed this time. Relief flooded through me. The window rolled down.

A man leaned slightly toward me, his gaze sweeping over my soaked figure.

Sorry,he said casually. Can’t get the seats wet.

My lips parted slightly.

Before I could say anything-

He drove off.

The tires splashed through a puddle, and water sprayed up straight onto me. I flinched, gasping as the cold hit me even harder.

For a moment, I just stood therefrozen.

Then I let out a shaky breath.

Wow,I whispered.

Why would anyone want to help someone like this?

I looked down at myself. I swallowed hard and forced myself to move again.

Step after step.

The sound of my heels clicking against the wet pavement echoed faintly in the empty street.

At least, my heel wasn’t broken. That would be my breaking point.

Just as the thought passed my mind, a sharp snap was heard.

I froze then slowly looked down.

I jinxed myself. My right heel was broken.

Crap,I muttered.

I bent down, pulling the shoes off my feet without hesitation. The cold pavement greeted my bare skin immediately, sending a shiver up my spine.

I gripped the heels tightly in one hand and kept walking.

The rain showed no signs of stopping.

Another cab approached.

I barely had the energy to react, but I stepped forward anyway.

Please,” I said again.

The cab slowed and stopped. My breath caught in relief.
