Chapter 9

Wesley’s back stiffened for a split second.

But he kept speaking with the officers, expression unchanged.

Rachel grew frantic. Wesley, you have a pup! Did you hear? Do you hear me or not?!

Ma’am, this is a police station. Please quiet down, someone reminded her.

Kayla’s eyes shimmered, but she forced herself to act calm. Mom, stop. Let Wesley finish dealing with things first.

And finally, Wesley turned around. His voice was cold.

There’s nothing left to deal with.

He faced both women, expression like carved stone.

Lauren spent a year and a half in werewolf prison because of you two. Every part of it was caused by your

choices.

Now the consequences have come. I won’t risk the Pack’s future any further. Momyou’re on your own.

Rachel’s face bleached white. Her entire body sagged as if something essential had been ripped out of her.

I turned to leave. Eric laced his fingers through mine and guided me toward the exit.

We reached the car when Wesley suddenly stepped in front of the window. Eric instantly went rigid, positioning himself between us with an Alpha’s instinctive defensive posture.

I touched his arm lightly, telling him to stand down.

Wesley’s eyes were bloodshot, frighteningly so.

Lauren.

He drew in a shaky breath.

My mother was foolish. What she did, I’m apologizing to you. You want to go through legal channels? I

won’t interfere.

These past days, I’ve thought things through. Anyone who has ever hurt youI won’t let them go

unpunished.

His gaze was raw pain mixed with ruthless resolve.

Tomorrow, I’ll break my mate bond with Kayla. As for the pup, it won’t be born.

I frowned.

Your family affairs have nothing to do with me. And among those who hurt me, you were one of them.

Wesley went quiet for a few seconds. Then he smiled. A smile so broken it looked like it tore him from the

inside.

I know. That’s why I’m doing this… as punishment for myself. To see you happyI really am glad.

Eric finally scoffed, unable to hold back.

Oh? Alpha Wesley wants redemption? Going from scum to tragic lover overnight?

His tone was icecold.

No one cares how you feel. And as long as I’m here, in my wife’s eyes, there will never be a place for you.

I squeezed Eric’s hand gently, ending the scene.

Wesley, we are strangers now.”

I closed the window. The car pulled away.

In the rearview mirror, Wesley stood alone, hollowed out, watching as we grew farther and farther away.

lan sat curled in Eric’s arms, eating candy, blinking up at me.

Mom? Why was that male crying?

I squeezed his tiny fingers and smiled.

Because he has too much water in his head. So it leaked out through his eyes.

lan blinked seriously, trying hard to absorb this fact.

Eric couldn’t hold it back, a low, muffled laugh escaped him.

His broad, warm hand slid over mine, solid and steady.

The kind of quiet, unwavering love that didn’t demand anything, but built a home around me.

Happiness came softly.
