Chapter 4
Before long, I saw Issac’s face in the Nightshade Pack’s daily newsletter.
Chloe was tearfully thanking Issac, calling him her guide in her warrior career
Isaac wore a rare smile.
I gave a faint glance and went back to revising my teaching materials.
I earned three thousand from the last training session, which alleviated some of my financial
pressure.
I pushed myself even harder, wishing there were 48 hours in a day.
In the past few days, my brother, for reasons I couldn’t quite figure out, transferred me some
money.
Twenty thousand.
Staring at the transfer, I hesitated for a long time but eventually accepted it.
I needed the money. A lot of money.
I wrote an IOU and sent it to my brother.
He called immediately, “Freya, that money’s for you, you don’t need to pay it back.”
“It’s better to settle it properly.” I insisted that I would pay him back.
Unable to argue, my brother changed the subject, “Freya, Chloe feels that it’s because of her that
you and Issac had a falling out. She wants to apologize to you in person. Would you…”
Having just received twenty thousand from him, I couldn’t bring myself to refuse.
Besides, it was just a few words–enough to put Chloe’s mind at ease.
“Name the time and place.”
I rearranged my work schedule and took a taxi over.
But when I opened the door, I saw a face I didn’t want to see.
Issac was sitting at the center of the table. Beside him were my brother, his wife, and a few of his
comrades.
I immediately looked at my brother.
He lowered his head, too guilty to meet my gaze, but he pulled me to a seat with force.
None of us spoke, and the air grew heavy with silence.
Chapter 4
Chloe stood up to break the tension, “Freya, Alpha helped me, but in doing so, he hurt you. The real culprit isn’t him, it’s all my fault. I’m the one who should apologize.”
She picked up her glass to drink.
Issac stopped her.
He looked at me with disappointment. “Look at how considerate Chloe is. Unlike you, always
throwing tantrums. You should help her more. She has no one else. Don’t hold against her.”
My brother also tried to intervene, saying how hard Chloe worked to get where she was.
As I listened, I couldn’t help but laugh.
I placed the medical report on the table. “It hasn’t been easy for me either. My old injury flared up,
and I was advised to stop training and rest. Maybe you could pity me too?”
Issac stared at the report, slamming his fist on the table in anger. “You throw tantrums, and now you’re skipping training too?! The Communications Unit may not be frontline combat, but it’s still a vital post!”
“Well, what choice do I have? My boyfriend had money to throw a celebration for someone else, but
none to help me recover. So the injury dragged on, relapsed, and now I’m grounded.”
“Since I’m so pitiful… why don’t you help me out?“I gave Issac a mocking look. “I just don’t get it.
You can give your all to a random soldier, yet be so heartless to your own girlfriend.”
“I used to think you were just a stickler for principles. But seeing how you treat Chloe… I realize it’s
just hypocrisy.”
“The Issac I loved is long gone.”
It became clear to me why Issac insisted on getting Chloe into his squad.
Next year was the deadline he had agreed on with the Elder Council. He needed more achievements to prove he was a worthy Alpha for the pack.
He had failed many times before, and in the highly competitive special forces, his qualifications
were still lacking compared to others, so he wanted to create momentum for himself.
What could be more eye–catching than having his own warriors break the rules and enter the elite warrior squad?
At this point, he couldn’t let me into his squad. He was afraid of people accusing him of nepotism.
But I had earned my place there through my own merit!
In this game of his, he got political credit, and Chloe got the career boost.
Chapter 4
And I was the only one left behind, sacrificed like a fool.
Now, all I could do was work desperately to pay off my debt.
I closed my eyes in exhaustion.
“If you want to avoid suspicion, then let’s make a clean break.”
“From now on, I won’t be your girlfriend. And Patrick… you might as well act like you never had a sister.”
