Chapter 139: The Queen’s First Command

Phoebe’s Perspective

“D-don’t move… please, don’t…” Alpha Howard’s voice trembled, breaking under the weight of pure terror. “I—I don’t…” His words caught in his throat, strangled by the paralyzing fear as death loomed dangerously close.

His claws sank into my neck, tearing the skin and drawing blood, yet I felt nothing. A chilling numbness had overtaken me, dulling every sensation. My body had gone cold, disconnected from the sharp sting of pain.

My eyes locked onto the beast’s mesmerizing electric blue gaze. He remained perfectly still for a moment, then began to advance with a predator’s grace, each step calculated like a hunter weighing his prey before the strike.

“I’ll… I’ll let her live if you let me go…” Howard’s grip tightened as he dragged me along, his ragged breath hot and uneven against my ear, struggling to steady himself despite the chaos.

The other alpha’s heart must have skipped a beat when the king passed by him. Death was expected, inevitable even, yet the beast’s attention was solely fixed on me. Everyone else seemed to vanish from existence.

Alpha Wallace should have run, should have seized the chance to escape, but his legs were frozen, as if turned to stone. Terror had completely paralyzed him.

He had no one to blame but himself for his foolishness. He should have stood his ground more firmly, resisted their influence with greater resolve.

Now, all those people lay dead, and his own execution was only a matter of time.

Howard continued to bargain with the beast king, desperation his only weapon.

His anxiety made his grip on my throat even tighter, sending fresh waves of agony coursing through me.

Blood oozed from the wound, staining his trembling hand, but he seemed oblivious. His gaze never wavered from the king, unable to tear his eyes away.

“No… I will kill her… I swear I will…”

For one frozen moment, his entire body stiffened, as if every nerve had short-circuited. But that brief hesitation was all the king needed.

In the next heartbeat, the beast’s jaws clamped down on Howard’s skull, denying him even a chance to react before crushing the life out of him instantly.

Perry’s Perspective

With the alpha dead, I shifted back into my human form and strode toward the last remaining threat.

Alpha Wallace could almost taste his impending death. His heart pounded so loudly I could hear it across the room. Words had deserted him completely.

He stood no chance against me in a fight.

The room offered no escape, no hiding place.

All that remained was to await the inevitable end.

He had accepted his fate, though regret tainted every breath he took.

My footsteps echoed like a somber funeral march, each step drawing him closer to oblivion.

But then I stopped abruptly. Alpha Wallace squeezed his eyes shut, bracing for the final blow.

Yet it never came.

The previous alpha had sired him late in life. It would be a tragedy if his first mistake as leader brought ruin to his pack—and cost him his life.

“Wh-what should I do now…?” he asked, voice trembling.

Though he had escaped death today, he would not remain beyond the king’s reach if I decided he needed to die.

“Pray the future queen can keep the king’s fury in check,” Elder Tricia replied gravely.

Perry’s Perspective

Marcela carefully wrapped the bandage around Phoebe’s neck as I watched every movement she made. The healer was visibly frightened, terrified that one wrong touch might cost her her life. She had heard about the massacre in the dining hall.

She couldn’t blame me for my reaction—those fools should have known better than to insult my mate.

What else did they expect to happen?

“She’ll be fine, my king,” Marcela whispered softly.

“Leave,” I commanded coldly.

Without waiting for a second order, Marcela fled the room, ignoring Phoebe’s pleading eyes begging her to stay with us.

But what choice did the healer have? I wouldn’t harm Phoebe—she was mine—but Marcela was just another replaceable servant.

Once she was gone, I moved closer to my mate, wrapping my arms protectively around her fragile form.
