“Sure, but Ms. Flemming wants her husband to marry into her family. You can’t do that, can you?”
Heath did not think Sonny would ever agree to marry into the Flemming family.
Sonny said, “I’m not at that stage yet, so there’s no point thinking about it.”
Nothing had even begun between him and Everly, so talking about marriage was getting too far ahead of themselves.
“Want a drink?” Sonny asked. “Since you feel like you’ve been wronged, let’s have a couple of drinks. We’ll just stop before we get drunk.”
“I’ll pass. I was only complaining. It’s not like I’m actually upset. I’ve grown up and stopped tagging along whenever my parents go out. It’s just that with both my parents and Callie away, the house suddenly feels lonely.
“If I didn’t complain a little, my parents would probably forget they even have a son and keep treating me like a workhorse.
“You’re leaving on a business trip tomorrow, and I have meetings too. Even if I don’t get drunk, drinking tonight would only make me feel worse. Every time I drink, I wake up the next morning with a headache.”
Heath continued, “These days, I barely drink at business dinners either. At most, I’ll have just one or two, but never more than three. When someone offers me a drink, I only take a sip. It’s my body, so I have to take care of it.”
With his status, no one would dare to pressure him to drink at social events anyway.
After all, he was the one people wanted to do business with, not the other way around. There was no reason for him to please anyone. Even if he did not drink, no one would say a word.
Most of the time, he simply drank tea instead of alcohol or only had a tiny amount.
His father stopped drinking altogether at business functions. Apparently, after his parents got married, Zachary had suffered from stomach problems, so Serenity told him to cut back on alcohol. Zachary had turned his wife’s concern into his ultimate excuse. Whenever someone offered him a drink, he would simply say that his wife did not let him drink.
People outside the family all joked that Zachary was henpecked.
Heath knew better. His parents were simply devoted to each other and reasonable. Whoever had the better argument won, and the other listened. His mother did keep an eye on his father, but she was not particularly strict.
Serenity had told all of them that when they attended business dinners, they should drink in moderation and never overdo it. A hangover was miserable, and excessive drinking was bad for their health. Their bodies belonged to them, so they had to take care of themselves.
Money could always be earned later, and their family was not short of money. York Corporation had been the leader in the business world for decades. There was no reason to destroy their health over some business.
Heath was not the only one. Everyone in the family did the same and kept their drinking to a minimum at social functions.
People outside the family knew that the York men were not heavy drinkers, so no one dared to force alcohol on them.
“Aunt Seren is right. I’ve gotten drunk a few times, and waking up was horrible. It took me a few days to feel normal again. It really was miserable. Also, drinking can easily lead to trouble.”
