Married Your Girl Bestie as a Dare? Congrats You're Stuck with her now novel Chapter 2

Chapter 2

When I pushed the door open, the apartment was pitch-black.

Mason’s shoes were gone from the entryway. The house slippers I had bought for him were still neatly lined up beside the door. He wasn’t coming back tonight.

I changed my shoes, didn’t turn on the lights, and went straight to the couch.

The darkness blurred every trace of him in the room, giving me a brief moment to breathe.

Out of habit, I took out my phone, unlocked the screen, and tapped it open. It was Mason’s post from half an

hour earlier.

A grid of photos filled the screen. Every single one showed him and Harper pressed close together.

One was taken at a restaurant, feeding each other cake. Another had them laughing into the wind by the river.

And in one photo, they held up two freshly issued marriage certificates toward the camera, Harper’s head tilted happily against Mason’s shoulder.

They looked far happier than they had that morning at City Hall.

The caption read: [The best dare is turning a joke into something real.]

The post already had hundreds of likes and comments.

[Holy hell, Mason, you actually did it? Congrats!]

[I’ve been saying it forever, you two are perfect together!]

[Newlyweds! When are we getting invited to the wedding party?]

Harper replied to the comments one by one, her tone openly smug.

[Thanks everyone. Drinks are on us next time.]

I scrolled expressionlessly, as if I were watching a farce that had nothing to do with me.

My phone buzzed. A private message from a mutual friend popped up.

[Chloe, what’s going on with Mason and Harper? Did you two… break up?]

Before I could figure out how to reply, my mom’s call came through. Her voice was tight with worry.

“Chloe, did you see Mason’s post? What does that mean? Did you two have a fight? How could he be with

Harper…”

“Mom,” I cut her off. My voice was so calm it surprised even me. “We broke up.”

There was silence on the other end for a few seconds. Then her voice came back, restrained but angry.

“When did this happen? Why didn’t you tell us? Was it that Harper girl…”

“It’s nothing,” I said softly. “We just weren’t right for each other. Please don’t bring him up again.”

I didn’t want to explain those ugly, ridiculous reasons. I didn’t want my parents worrying about me either.

After a few brief reassurances, I hung up.

The world seemed to go quiet all at once.

I stood up and turned on all the lights in the living room. The harsh brightness flooded the space, exposing every ugly truth hidden in this relationship.

I walked into the bedroom, pulled the suitcase out from under the wardrobe, and started packing my things,

one item at a time.

When I reached the nightstand, I saw the matching mugs we had picked out together.

I took the one that belonged to me and dropped it into the suitcase without hesitation.

As for Mason’s mug, I left it behind for him and Harper to use.

It didn’t take long to finish packing. Half the closet was empty. The vanity looked bare.

Every trace of me in this place was erased bit by bit.

My phone lit up again.

[Chloe, don’t overthink it. I’m out celebrating with the guys. I’ll be back later.]

[You were so calm today, I thought you really didn’t care.]

[Tomorrow I’ll divorce Harper and explain everything to you properly.]

I stared at the messages and didn’t reply. He couldn’t even be bothered to call.

The world felt wonderfully quiet.

Dragging my suitcase to the door, I turned back for one last look at the place I had once believed would be my home for life.
