Married Your Girl Bestie as a Dare? Congrats You're Stuck with her now novel Chapter 4

Chapter 4

The next morning, just as County Court opened its doors, Mason and Harper arrived.

Neither of them looked particularly put together. Their hair was slightly messy, dark circles lingering beneath their eyes from a night of indulgence. And yet, there was no mistaking the smug satisfaction they failed to

hide.

Mason slapped two freshly issued marriage certificates onto my desk, his tone casual, as if he were bringing

up something trivial.

“Chloe, take care of it. We’re here to file for divorce.”

As he leaned forward, I caught sight of the vivid mark on the side of his neck.

A kiss mark. Bright, unmistakable, and far too fresh. The color was almost excessive, like a deliberate

declaration of ownership.

My emotions remained perfectly still. Not a ripple stirred.

“Chloe, I really have to thank you for yesterday,” Harper said with a sweet laugh. Her fingers traced the mark on Mason’s neck, slow and deliberate. “Mason was right. That dare was actually pretty exciting.”

I ignored her provocation. Reaching out, I took the two marriage certificates and began the procedure.

“Your IDs,” I said evenly, all business.

Mason pulled two IDs from his wallet with visible impatience and slid them across the desk, frowning. “Hurry up. We have plans this afternoon.”

I accepted the IDs and typed unhurriedly at the keyboard, pulling up their registration record.

Their wedding photo appeared on the screen. Harper’s smile was radiant. Mason, on the other hand, looked stiff, his expression subtly strained.

“The information checks out,” I said.

I looked up, a standard professional smile on my face.

Mason visibly relaxed, clearly assuming this would be over in minutes.

Harper straightened her clothes as well, already preparing to reclaim her freedom.

But instead of reaching for the divorce filing forms, I calmly opened the drawer to my right and took out a newly issued document. I laid it flat on the desk and slid it toward them.

Mandatory Cooling-Off Period Notice.

Mason’s smile froze. “What is this?”

I adjusted the thin-framed glasses on my nose, my gaze steady and detached behind the lenses.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Carter. Ms. Lane,” I said calmly, my voice carrying clearly through the quiet hall. “To prevent impulsive divorces, and in accordance with the latest regulations issued by the department, you are required to enter a mandatory six-month cooling-off period.”
