Chapter 6
The news that Mason and Harper were trapped in a six-month cooling-off period spread through our shared
social circles like wildfire.
At first, it was Harper herself crying in a private group chat, accusing me of abusing my position and
deliberately blocking their divorce. But it didn’t take long before someone dropped a screenshot of the
official directive into the chat.
It was the same document I had “accidentally” posted on my own feed, visible to mutual contacts only.
The narrative flipped instantly.
[So you played stupid games and won stupid prizes. Who are you blaming?]
[Seriously laughing. Valentine’s Day marriage with a ‘girl best friend’ and now this?]
[Six months should be plenty of time for your two to really ‘bond.’]
[Chloe did great. That kind of trash deserved exactly this.]
Mason tried to explain himself online, posting a vague, carefully worded statement.
[Some policies come unexpectedly, but I believe that people who truly love each other can withstand any
test.]
The comments underneath were nothing but question marks and disbelief.
[Are you okay?]
[Do you hear yourself right now?]
Harper went completely silent. She even deleted the post she’d used to show off before.
Meanwhile, my life moved forward, quietly and steadily.
After leaving that so-called home, I rented a small apartment near my office. One bedroom, one living room, south-facing, with a tiny balcony. It wasn’t big, but every inch of it belonged to me.
That weekend, I met Emily Brooks for afternoon tea.
“You’re really just letting him off like that?” Emily asked, stirring her coffee, her brow furrowed.
“What else was I supposed to do?” I took a small bite of my macaron. “Cry, scream, threaten to die? That’s
not my style.”

“But Chloe, five years. You were together for five years. And he just…”
“That’s exactly why it needed to end with dignity,” I interrupted gently, smiling. “Losing your composure over
someone who doesn’t love you isn’t worth it.”
Emily studied me for a long moment, then suddenly reached across the table and squeezed my hand.
“You’ve changed.”
“Have I?”
“You’re cooler now,” she said with a grin. “I like this version of you.”
I squeezed her hand back, warmth spreading through my chest.
Just then, my phone rang. An unfamiliar number.
I hesitated, then answered. “Hello?”
“Chloe, it’s me.” Mason’s voice came through the line, rough and hoarse. “Can we talk?”
Emily mouthed, Who is it? I silently formed an “M” with my lips. She immediately rolled her eyes.
“I don’t think there’s anything left to talk about,” I said calmly.
“Just ten minutes,” he pressed. “I’ll be at the café downstairs from your office. I’ll wait until five.”
He hung up before I could respond. I glanced at the time. Four twenty.
“Are you going?” Emily asked.
I was quiet for a few seconds, then shook my head. “No.”
“Really?”
“Really.” I picked up my bag. “Come on. Go with me to buy some plants. My balcony’s still empty.”
We actually went to the flower market.
I chose a gardenia, the same variety as the one I used to have. But this one belonged to me alone.
At five ten, Mason texted. [I waited at the café for an hour.]
I didn’t reply.
At five thirty, another message came through. [Chloe, is this really how it ends between us?]

Still no reply.
At six, his call came in again. I muted my phone and slipped it into my bag.
Emily looked at me and suddenly said, “Chloe, you know what? The way you are right now is incredibly
attractive.”
I smiled. “Come on. Dinner’s on me. Let’s celebrate my rebirth.”
