Chapter 76: Choosing a School

(Aurora’s POV)

Leo’s follow-up results came back clean.

The doctor confirmed it while flipping through the charts – full recovery, no complications, no restrictions beyond avoiding high-intensity physical activity for the next few months. Leo sat on the exam table with his hands in his lap and didn’t react much, but I could see the tension leave his shoulders.

I thanked the doctor and steered Leo out of the hospital.

“Okay,” I said, once we were outside. “Let’s talk about school.”

Leo fell into step beside me. “I figured that was coming.”

“Public high schools are basically off the table. The enrollment windows have closed and the waitlists are long. That leaves private schools.” I’d done the research already. “I’ve narrowed it down to three. All solid academically, reasonable tuition, good faculty-to-student ratios.”

“Not the international ones?”

“No. Those places are expensive and the social culture is toxic. You’d spend half your energy keeping up with who has the better car.” I looked at him. “You don’t need that.”

He nodded. “Whatever you think is best.”

“I want to hear your opinion too, Leo.”

He shrugged, but it wasn’t dismissive. “I trust you. Let’s just go see them.”

We started with Westfield Academy – the closest to home, and the one I thought had the strongest academic program of the three.

The admissions office was clean and formal, the kind of room designed to make parents feel they were somewhere serious. Mr. Sayer, the admissions director, was a thin man in a suit that fit him a little too well. He opened Leo’s file and went quiet for a long moment.

“I notice there’s no parent present,” he said.

“Our mother isn’t well today,” I said. “I’m his legal guardian for the purposes of enrollment.”

He accepted that without comment. He kept reading. Then he looked up. “There’s a significant gap in his academic record. And this notation here – a recent surgical procedure.”

“The hospital documentation is in the file. The surgery was successful and he’s been fully cleared by his physician.”

“We take our duty-of-care obligations seriously, Ms. Caldwell. If a student has an existing medical history, we need to ensure his records comply with our accommodation policies. If something were to happen on school grounds-”

“Nothing is going to happen on school grounds,” I said, keeping my voice level. “The surgery corrected the underlying condition entirely. Leo has the same physical capacity as any other student his age, with the single exception that he shouldn’t participate in high-intensity sports for the next few months. That’s it. That’s the full extent of it.”

Sayer folded his hands on the desk.

“I understand your concern,” I continued. “But I’m asking you to give him the opportunity to sit the entrance exam. Let his scores speak for themselves. If he doesn’t meet your threshold, we walk away.”

Leo leaned forward slightly. “Mr. Sayer.”

Sayer looked at him.

“I know what this file looks like,” Leo said. His voice was steady, not defensive. “Missed exams, medical leave, no formal completion certificate. I get it. People look at that and they make assumptions.” He paused. “My sister never did. She always expected me to perform at the same level as everyone else. I’d like the chance to prove she was right.”

Sayer studied him for a moment.

I held my breath.

That was when the door opened.

Three people walked in – a group of what looked like administrators and board members, mid-conversation. I stood to acknowledge them, and then I stopped.

One of the women in the group was Joyce Langford.

She looked the same as she had at dinner – composed, silver-haired, moving carefully but with purpose. Sayer practically snapped to attention.

“Dr. Langford,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting you today.”

I hadn’t known. I’d had no idea Joyce had any connection to Westfield Academy, let alone

that she’d been its principal and a board member. The name on the building’s history plaque in the lobby – I’d walked right past it without registering it.
