Chapter 83: Court Hearing

(Author’s POV)

The next morning, Aurora was at the courthouse steps at eight forty-five in a black blazer and straight-leg trousers. She spotted Leo across the street, already heading toward the coffee shop. She caught his eye and pointed at the door. He gave her a thumbs-up and disappeared inside.

She turned back toward the entrance.

“Did your mother know he was coming?” Gavin fell into step beside her and asked.

“Leo told her he was going to the gym.”

Gavin glanced sideways at her. “Smart kid.”

“She would’ve shown up and made it worse.” Aurora straightened her jacket. “She always does.”

“No argument there.” Gavin checked his watch. “We’re on in ten. Whatever they throw at you – don’t react. Don’t let them see you move.”

“I know.”

“I mean it. Their whole strategy is to make you look unstable.”

“Gavin.” She looked at him. “I know.”

He nodded once and held the door.

Inside the courtroom, Aurora scanned the gallery before she sat down. Jasper’s side was already there – Victoria in a cream blazer, Sienna beside her in navy, both of them seated like they were attending a board meeting. The neck of Sienna’s dress was open enough to show the diamond necklace. Even from across the room, it caught the light.

Aurora’s side of the gallery was empty. She hadn’t called Olivia. Hadn’t told anyone. This wasn’t something she wanted witnessed. She just wanted it finished.

The judge entered. Everyone stood.

Gavin opened simply and directly. He laid out the complaint in clear terms: emotional abuse, psychological coercion, an ongoing extramarital relationship throughout the duration of the marriage. He described the miscarriage. He described Jasper leaving the country with the third party during Aurora’s recovery. He requested dissolution of the marriage, Aurora’s full

share of community property under California law, and additional damages for dissipation of marital assets.

Before the last word was out of his mouth, Victoria was on her feet.

“She’s trying to steal from my son!” Her voice cut across the room. “What has she ever contributed? What gives her the right to take anything?”

The judge’s gavel came down hard.

“Ma’am.” His voice was flat and final. “You are in contempt of this court. One more outburst and I will have you removed.”

Victoria sat down. Jasper leaned over and said something to Sienna, who put a hand on Victoria’s arm.

Jasper’s attorney stood and delivered his counter in three clean strokes. First: the relationship with Sienna was nothing more than compassionate support for his deceased brother’s widow, entirely appropriate given the family connection. Second: claims of emotional abuse were unfounded – Jasper had repeatedly and generously funded treatment for Aurora’s ill younger brother, expenses she could never have covered on her own salary. Third: Aurora had publicly berated her own daughter, demonstrating emotional instability and parental unfitness. The attorney requested that Aurora leave the marriage with zero assets and pay a substantial alimony to Jasper.

Aurora kept her eyes forward. She didn’t shift in her seat. She didn’t look at Jasper.

Jasper was watching her. She could feel it – that particular quality of attention, waiting for her to flinch. She gave him nothing.

Gavin waited for the attorney to finish. Then he reached into his briefcase.

The first item was a set of photographs. He placed them on the evidence table without ceremony. The images were clear: Jasper and Sienna, unmistakable, in a context that left no room for interpretation.

“The individual seated in the gallery,” Gavin said, turning toward the bench, “is the third party

named in this complaint.”

He looked directly at Sienna.

Sienna’s expression fractured. “That’s not those are fabricated, that’s not-”

The judge’s gavel struck again. “Witnesses and gallery members do not speak. You will be

removed.”

Sienna pressed her lips together. Her fingers found the edge of the bench.

Gavin moved to the next set of materials. Digital records: photographs found in a concealed section of Jasper’s home office, dozens of them, all of Sienna. And an audio recording – Sienna’s voice, unmistakable, threatening Aurora directly. He played thirty seconds of it in the courtroom. The quality was clean.

Then he addressed the attorney’s attack on Aurora’s professional standing.

“Opposing counsel has characterized my client as someone without independent capability,” Gavin said. “For the record: Aurora graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a focus in pharmaceutical research and development. She spent years working in clinical drug development before she was pressured to vacate her position to accommodate the defendant’s relationship with the third party. She was moved into a secretarial role. Since leaving the marriage, she joined the R&D division at Everett BioTech, where she has led the development of a proprietary drug formulation that has now been awarded a patent license. The defendant did not support her career. He ended it. And she rebuilt it the moment she was
