Marry Ex's Billionaire Uncle After Divorce (Aurora and Jasper) novel Chapter 169

Chapter 134: Saying I Do

(Author’s POV)

Leo lifted his head and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. He forced a smile. I’m fine. Just missing my sister.

Nobody knew better than he did how much Aurora had carried, or for how long. He made a quiet promise to himself, sitting there at that desk: every sacrifice she had made for him he would spend the rest of his life making sure she knew it was worth it.

Phineas went through his wardrobe before they left for City Hall and settled on a white Brioni dress shirt. He rolled the cuffs to his elbows, left the tie on the rack, skipped the jacket entirely. He stood in front of the mirror for a moment and decided it was right deliberate in its casualness, not trying too hard.

He took a photo and sent it to Gavin with a single line: *How do I look?*

Gavin stared at the screen. It was just a white shirt.

He typed back: *Fine.*

Phineas replied: *Don’t be jealous. You’ll have more reasons soon enough.*

Gavin rolled his eyes at his phone. Then he paused. After Aurora’s divorce, he’d assumed Phineas would

eventually make a move but he hadn’t expected it to happen this fast. These two were actually going to

do it. Today.

Aurora stood at her apartment door with her documents in hand, and the feeling in her chest was difficult

to name. Not calm, exactly. Not nervous either. She had no grand illusions about this marriage, but she

wasn’t afraid of it. She had a quiet, stubborn conviction that a person couldn’t be unlucky forever.

She’d changed into a simple dark dress and tucked her hair back behind her ears. When she pulled the

door open, Phineas was already in the hallway, leaning against the wall white shirt, dark trousers, no

jacket. The absence of the jacket didn’t diminish anything about him. If anything, the fitted shirt made him

harder to look away from.

He glanced up when he saw her. The corner of his mouth moved. I’ll drive. My wife doesn’t need to worry

about directions.

Aurora didn’t argue. She followed him downstairs.

At City Hall, they filled out the forms and were guided to the photo area by a staff member. The woman

looked them over, then produced a professional smile.

You two look very wellmatched, she said, and gestured for them to stand closer together.

Phineas put his hand on Aurora’s waist. Aurora’s body went slightly rigid, but she didn’t pull away. The shutter clicked. The moment was fixed.

After the photo, Phineas didn’t move toward the exit. He stopped and looked at her.

Do you want to go to the ceremony room?

Aurora thought about the first time she’d been married. She had tried to pull Jasper toward that same moment, and he’d said, flatly, *There’s no point*, and stopped walking. She looked down at the floor.

It’s not required, she said. We don’t have to.”

Phineas didn’t answer. He took her hand and walked toward the ceremony room.

Aurora went with him. She didn’t resist.

The officiant guided them through the vows in turn. When it was Phineas’s turn, he took the card, glanced at it once, and set it aside. He looked directly at her and recited each line from memory, unhurried, his voice steady and even. When the formal vows were finished, he paused.

Them his voice dropped, low enough that it was almost private.

Will you marry me?

Something in Aurora’s chest lurched. It was like a circuit had been reconnected somewhere she hadn’t

known was dark.

I will,she said quietly.

Before the last syllable had fully left her, he leaned down and kissed her. Aurora’s mind went completely

blank. Her heart was beating faster than she was comfortable admitting. When he pulled back, he brushed his thumb lightly across the corner of her mouth. His voice was barely above a whisper.

Mrs. Everett let’s go home.

On the drive back, Aurora turned her face toward the window. She was clearly working very hard to pretend nothing had happened. The flush on her face hadn’t faded.

Phineas, for his part, looked entirely composed. At least on the surface.

He set the marriage certificate on the center console, then picked up his phone. He reached over and took her hand both certificates, her hand, his hand and took a photo. He looked at it for a moment, then put

the phone back in his pocket.

Aurora turned away from the window and hesitated. I have a request.”

Phineas glanced at her.

I don’t want people at the company to know we’re married. Her voice was measured. I got into that lab on my own. I want to keep it that way. I don’t want anyone thinking I took a shortcut. Can we keep it quiet internally, at least for now?

Sure.” He nodded. We don’t talk about it inside the company. He paused. HR will need a disclosure filing eventually conflict of interest protocols, standard procedure. But that’s later.

Aurora gave a small nod and accepted the answer.

Phineas made no such agreement about anything outside the company. He kept that thought to himself.

A few minutes into the drive, he suggested they stop at a home goods store on the way. He asked, almost offhandedly, whether she was happy with the apartment he had several properties, and if she wanted to move, they could look that afternoon. She could pick whichever she wanted.

Aurora’s ears went pink. She looked down and turned the document folder over in her lap, her fingers moving without purpose. “The apartment is fine. We don’t need to move.

The corner of Phineas’s mouth curved. Then we’ll just pick up a few things. Make it feel more like home.

Aurora was quiet for a moment. Then, softly: Okay.
